Cher: The Memoir, Part One promises to be an engaging and exciting audiobook experience, befitting this incredible book. Read in part by Cher herself, the book is introduced, and each chapter launched, by the author. Rounding out each chapter as she continues the narrative is celebrated stage actor Stephanie J. Block. Stephanie starred on Broadway in The Cher Show for which she won a Tony Award, Drama Desk Award, and Outer Critics Circle Award.

Revisado: 04-15-25
I normally don't get into books about entertainment celebrities, but I bought this audiobook because I always admired the breath and durability of Cher's career. This book is compelling. I found myself looking forward to my morning and evening commutes so I could listen to it. Can't wait for Part Two.

With the same suppleness, energy, and range of voices that won their translation of The Brothers Karamazov the PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Prize, Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky offer a brilliant translation of Crime and Punishment, Dostoevsky's astounding pyschological thriller, newly revised for his bicentenniel.

I purchased the previous version of this translation by P&V, only to be disappointed by the narration. Apparently others felt the same because this audiobook has been re-released with a different narrator. I give high marks to this performance.

Historia
The story told in Vasily Grossman's Stalingrad unfolds across the length and breadth of Russia and Europe. At the heart of the novel is the Shaposhnikov family. Even as the Germans advance, the matriarch, Alexandra Vladimirovna, refuses to leave Stalingrad. Far from the front, her eldest daughter, Ludmila, is unhappily married to the Jewish physicist Viktor Shtrum. Viktor's research may be of crucial military importance, but he is distracted by thoughts of his mother in the Ukraine, lost behind German lines.

Historia
Alexei Navalny began writing Patriot shortly after his near-fatal poisoning in 2020. It is the full story of his life: his youth, his call to activism, his marriage and family, his commitment to challenging a world super-power determined to silence him, and his total conviction that change cannot be resisted—and will come. Patriot is Navalny’s final letter to the world: a moving account of his last years spent in the most brutal prison on earth; a reminder of why the principles of individual freedom matter so deeply; and a rousing call to continue the work for which he sacrificed his life.

Darkness at Noon
Revisado: 10-23-24
Arthur Koestler's classic 1940 novel, "Darkness at Noon," is one of my favorite reads. Its narrator is loosely based on a composite of three early Bolshevik revolutionaries who were falsely accused, imprisoned, tortured, convicted, and ultimately executed as a result of Stalin's show trials. While in prison awaiting his inevitable execution, the narrator reminisces about how his life's work in trying to better the plight of the Russian masses went awry, ultimately being hijacked by Stalin who was only interested in absolute power. In many ways Navalny's beautifully written memoir parallels "Darkness at Noon." Perhaps Navalny's work it is even more poignant because it isn't fiction. Every page drips his traits: brilliant, literate, funny, sarcastic, self-deprecating, and utterly courageous. I can't say enough good things about this book. I can only hope it is widely read by Russians. The British narrator is pitch perfect.

Historia
When, at age forty-six, Nancy Pelosi, mother of five, asked her youngest daughter if she should run for Congress, Alexandra Pelosi answered: “Mother, get a life!” And so Nancy did, and what a life it has been. In The Art of Power, Pelosi describes for the first time what it takes to make history—not only as the first woman to ascend to the most powerful legislative role in our nation, but to pass laws that would save lives and livelihoods, from the emergency rescue of the economy in 2008 to transforming health care.

Well done
Revisado: 08-16-24
I was skeptical about the author reading her own book since most authors flop. But she was surprisingly good. The best chapters deal with the passage of the ACA and her perceptions of the Jan 6 insurrection. Her criticism of Trump was expected and understandable, but to her credit she didn't make it the centerpiece of her lengthy government service. Her description of the assault on her husband was painful to listen to. Well worth your money and time.

Historia
“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

Historia
In music, counterpoint is the art of writing melodies that play in conjunction with one another, according to a strict set of rules, in order to emphasize the melody by contrast. In debate, point/counterpoint is a means of persuasion in which the speaker begins by conceding to their opponent’s argument before refuting it wholeheartedly. Aldous Huxley follows these traditions in his masterpiece Point Counter Point. The polarity between passion and reason in the intellectual life of the 1920s is demonstrated both in form and in theme in Huxley’s ambitious satire.

Finally
Revisado: 02-23-24
I began listening to audiobooks when Modern Library published its list of the 100 greatest English language novels of the 20th century. I assumed that I had read most of the century's great novels, but it turned out I had only read about 25. I figured I could "read" the rest via audiobooks. Over the years, most of the novels came out in audio format. But for some reason, Point Counter Point was a hold-out. I was pleased to see this English classic finally published as an audiobook.
Aldous Huxley is a great stylist, and that comes out in this book. I was generally familiar with the plotline, but I'm pleased that that I can tell myself I finally checked this novel off my bucket list.
Stefan Rudnicki is a capable and accomplished narrator. However, at times I found it difficult to distinguish which character was speaking since many of them sounded alike. Furthermore, although Mr. Rudnicki is a classically trained actor whose voice is appropriately aristocratic, he is American, not British. This issue was apparent when he read the lines of a character who was supposed to be of the lower English class (Frank Illidge). Mr. Rudnicki's voice sounded artificial and sometimes he forgot to stay in character.
Overall, I recommend this book to other listeners. Although not as compelling as Brave New World (few novels are), this is a great work of art.
