I'm always worried about opening a financial book because they tend to be long and dry. I don't want to spend a month trying to get through it (this only took me 3 days to finish). 5 Steps is written in plain English and gives a quick history on the financial industry (Bernie Madoff, Wall Street, all that). Then it talks about how the internet made things easier since a few keystrokes on the right website can tell you 99% of what you need to know about a company before ever talking to a salesperson.

I found 5 steps to be simply written for people like me who don't know much about retirement planners. The book gives some specific websites you can go to where you can see if an advisor has ever been sued. It also gives you specific questions to ask when you're interviewing someone.

It really helped me to cross companies off my list and find a few solid options!
