Historia
Thirty-nine was a fantastic year. I was married to the man I loved. I had a body that worked without creaking. My grandma, who raised me, was still healthy, and life was pretty damned good. But as they say, all good things come to an end. One year later, I’m a widow. My joints are starting to ache. Gram is in the nursing home, and dead people think my home is some kind of supernatural bed-and-breakfast. Gluing body parts onto semi-transparent people has become a side job - deceased people I’m not even sure are actually there.

Narrator.... has. AWKWARD PAUSES!!! and misplaced emphasis.
Revisado: 03-03-24
Main character annoyingly assumes everything and fails to ask logical and reasonable questions, just goes along ignoring her ignorance which could be easily fixed. Book doesn't have an ending, it just ends. Not that I care.

The fantasy novel you’ve always wished Jane Austen had written. When Jane realizes that one of Melody’s suitors is set on taking advantage of her sister for the sake of her dowry, she pushes her skills to the limit of what her body can withstand in order to set things right—and, in the process, accidentally wanders into a love story of her own.

Enjoyed the light tone and the nod to Austin in tone and theme. It may not stay with me, didn't change my life, but I am satisfied and entertained.

What??

If this is meant to horrify the reader by the ending it succeeded with me, I just don’t think that was the intent. But I am very unsettled by the neat ending and the main characters’ complacency with how it went down.

Historia
Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Catch a tiger by its toe. It's seared into Atlee Pine's memory: the kidnapper's chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. Mercy was taken. Atlee was spared. She never saw Mercy again. Three decades after that terrifying night, Atlee Pine works for the FBI. She's the lone agent assigned to the Shattered Rock, Arizona resident agency, which is responsible for protecting the Grand Canyon. So when one of the Grand Canyon's mules is found stabbed to death at the bottom of the canyon - and its rider missing - Pine is called in to investigate.

just bad
Revisado: 01-24-19
I like Baldacci, I have enjoyed several of his books, and I love the Grand Canyon, so how could this miss? But it did. The storyline was interesting and unique but it got lost when all these big tough high level operatives were repeatedly outmaneuvered by supergirl, either killed by her super strength or turned into docile idiots by her amazing wit that left them stupified, like "hey, how did you do dat?" in a voice that sounds like the narrator was striving for "stereotypical big dumb jock." I find myself wondering if all Baldacci's books are this bad and I just failed to notice before; it's that bad!

Really enjoyed the previous series, loved the strong and capable female leads. This book was even better! Meeting Eric and Maria and seeing them survive and thrive with a really likable group of survivors was so good. Can’t wait to read the next book.

First, this book is full of stories of actual survivors - and non-survivors -- of disasters, the stories are inspirational and motivational. Second, this book delves into the physiology and sociology of disasters which is so fascinating and presents a challenge I am trying to meet -- to be aware and be prepared.

Historia
The Netflix series Making a Murderer quickly became a huge hit, with over 19 million viewers in the US in the first 35 days. The series left many viewers with the opinion that Steven Avery - a man falsely imprisoned for almost 20 years on a rape charge - was railroaded into prison a second time by a corrupt police force and district attorney's office. Viewers were outraged, and hundreds of thousands demanded a pardon for Avery. The chief villain of the series: Ken Kratz, the special prosecutor who headed the investigation and prosecution.

Don't believe everything you see on Netflix!
Revisado: 07-24-17
I watched Making a Murderer, and like most viewers, I felt a strong sense of unease in what I witnessed there, especially in light of the fact that Mr. Avery had previously been wrongly convicted of a crime. But even then I kept thinking no conspiracy can be this vast and that there is a strong likelihood that Steven Avery killed Theresa Halbach -- and that he probably dragged his naïve nephew into the crime, maybe intending to groom him so Avery would have someone to share his depravity with in the future.
This book offered a strong rebuttal of the tv show that made me appreciate the damage a one-sided documentary can cause -- popular opinion of the uninformed masses is not an effective means of achieving justice (Adnan Syed notwithstanding); and it is seriously unfair to invite all society to judge dedicated life-long law enforcement officers through a filter as slanted and murky as Making a Murderer.

Fun and Imaginative
Revisado: 07-24-17
Creative theory on Jack the Ripper, this book intertwines history and imagination in an entertaining way, I really enjoyed the book! Did not like the narrator's female voices, but the story was good enough to overcome that minor annoyance. Kudos to the author for a fresh and fun take on some old ground! And thanks for inspiring me to get Treasure Island for my kids.
