Enid Blyton for adults
Revisado: 08-15-23
From a setup scenario with potential for so much more depth and complexity, it disappears into a series of romances and comfortable endings that put me in mind of the clichéd high school essay conclusion: "They all went home tired but happy".

Historia
Joe Coughlin is 19 when he meets Emma Gould. A small-time thief in 1920s Boston, he is told to cuff her while his accomplices raid the casino she works for. But Joe falls in love with Emma - and his life changes forever.
That meeting is the beginning of Joe's journey to becoming one of the nation's most feared and respected gangsters. It is a journey beset by violence, double-crossing, drama, and pain. And it is a journey into the soul of prohibition-era America....

What a brilliant author Dennis Lehane is: His plots are plausible and calculated, his writing skilled and effortless. Perhaps it is the genre that caused him to be less recognised than he should be. Whatever the reason, readers are missing out. This, for me, is the best of the Joe Coughlin series. And the narrator is perfect for the book.

Okay

Well. he's never going to be John Grisham or Scott Turow but it's not a bad read. He can write, the plot was thought out well, it just didn't have much spark. I could also have done without the philosophising about justice - yeah, we know, lots of grey areas.

Awful
Revisado: 06-25-23
Started with potential then rambled from implausible to just silly. This is the second of Abbott's books I've tried.
It seems obvious a writer should map out the plot before they start but here's another one who seems to think they can just wing it. Sorry, if I'm paying for a book I expect more effort.
The narrator was fine until he started the annoying habit of making statements sound like questions.

Historia
A young woman's body is found on a side street in Indianapolis, horrifyingly arranged. Meanwhile Frank Behr, who is down on his luck and virtually broke, takes on a no-win case to locate a single mother's wayward daughter who's been missing for months. Suddenly Behr feels the two cases may be connected, but he is years removed from his life as a legitimate police officer and has few friends left on the force. His relentless focus has always been his greatest strength...and his deepest flaw.

Wonder is something you thanks
Revisado: 07-14-15
A fair read but for a repeated and annoying misuse of the word "wondered".
Wonder is something you think, not something you say. If you voice something you winder, you "ask".
Other than that Scott Brick improves all the time. He has now developed the ability to rescue a book from mediocre to not bad. But this is not an author I plan to follow.

Even more relevant than when it was first published, this edition addresses contemporary issues in end-of-life care and includes an all-embracing and incisive afterword that examines the state of health care and our relationship with life as it approaches its terminus. How We Die also discusses how we can take control of our own final days and those of our loved ones.

not as comprehensive as I would have liked.
Revisado: 07-12-15
what a pity the unabridged version is not available. In the beginning this version it seemed to offer more of what I sought: The actual mechanisms of death as they vary according to the cause, and what the patient feels as each kicks in. It moves more on to the philosophy of death and wisdom of how loved ones can best help the dying patient psychologically. Useful things to know but not what I sought.

Historia
The daunting task that confronts Gurney, once the NYPD's top homicide cop: determining the guilt or innocence of a woman already convicted of shooting her charismatic politician husband - who was felled by a rifle bullet to the brain while delivering the eulogy at his own mother's funeral. Peeling back the layers, Gurney quickly finds himself waging a dangerous battle of wits with a thoroughly corrupt investigator, a disturbingly cordial mob boss, a gorgeous young temptress, and a bizarre assassin whose child-like appearance has earned him the nickname Peter Pan.

Revisado: 04-16-15
Who wrote this and what have they done with John Verdon? Long winded, overwritten, ponderous plot with more holes than a Swiss cheese. Narrator thinks all emotion is shouted, and he really shouldn't do women. Let us know when the real Verdon writes again, please.

What a shame about the reader
Revisado: 12-17-13
The story seems to be up to Hiaasen's usual standard, but it is ruined by the really bad narration. Hiassen has had some great readers, why suddenly this guy? The reading is jerky, sing-song and the emphasis is often wrong. What a pity.

Plodding, implausible
Revisado: 07-10-13
The real mystery is how this ever got published. A weak and plodding attempt at a teenage version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, maybe? The narrator certainly seems to be reading to children. An implausible, rambling plot littered with unoriginal philosophy explained in wearying detail. My patience wore out in the first half - in which very little happened.
