Historia
In American Marxism, Mark Levin explained how Marxist ideology has invaded our society and culture. In doing so, he exposed the institutions, scholars, and activists leading the revolution. Now, he picks up where he left off: to hold responsible the true malefactors steering our country down the wrong path. Insightful and hard-hitting as ever, Levin proves that since its establishment, the Democrat Party has set out to rewrite history and destroy the foundation of freedom in America.

Igloo and Angie are the co-founders of a new social network, Tapestry, based on the principles of privacy and data ownership. Two years later, with Tapestry poised to become the world’s largest social network, their rapid growth puts them under government scrutiny. Tapestry’s privacy and security is so effective that it impedes the government’s ability to monitor routine communications. Fearing Tapestry will spread to encompass the whole of the Internet, threatening America’s surveillance abilities around the globe, the government swoops in to stop Angie and company.

Well, that's that
Revisado: 02-09-25
I saw this book when I decided to revisit Kill Process and the Avagadro Series in light of current events and an interview with the author and Glenn Beck.
I enjoyed the previous books a great deal, but the cringe level in this one was too much.
I did something I have never done before, and shudder to admit. I skipped forward through the SM stuff after it was introduced as a theme. I understand the utility of it. Igloo becomes a more fleshed out character, and it gives her something to hide, some non-plot. consequence. The moral hang ups of the team seem tacked on, and the transgressiveness loses its power after a few paragraphs.
There are other, more important themes that got shorted by highlighting the pomp of what would be a vanilla aspect of any modern thinker.
imagine if all that energy has gone into the explication of Nathan 9's motivation and transition to the sighted world. that seems far richer to me.
It was fine, a bit heavy handed in some ways, and totally missing the mark in others. Could have used more nuance with the political stuff, since the overweening government in question was decidedly liberal, and the hackers presented in the story would have been at least marginally conflicted.

Historia
The Great War changed everything and everyone, and Larry Darrell is no exception. Though his physical wounds from the war heal, his spirit is changed almost beyond recognition. He leaves his betrothed, the beautiful and devoted Isabel; studies philosophy and religion in Paris; lives as a monk, and witnesses the exotic hardships of Spanish life. All of life that he can find - from an Indian Ashrama to labor in a coal mine - becomes Larry's spiritual experiment as he spurns the comfort and privilege of the Roaring 20s.

A moment in time
Revisado: 01-09-23
I have read and listened to many books of many different genres and this is definitely one of them.
I came to this book by way of a person I respect saying it the best, or a benchmark or some damned thing.
This book is performed flawlessly, in the way that you cannot imagine any other voice making the words enter your head. The reader's voice was in my head while I read my paper copy
I like to read along with a paper copy while listening, not at the same time, but to acquaint myself with the way that the words look on the page, or just review passages and put some notes in the margin. In this case I wanted to get the exact title and spelling of one of the books of poetry referenced.
This is probably the only remaining benefit to paper books, that, and the fact that they cannot be randomly removed from your library, which has happened more than once for me. Just so you know, when this happens, and you catch it, you are the one that has to call customer service, and they will refund your credits, but all the notes and clips you took while listening the first or second times will be lost.
I include the kvetching above to exemplify the fact that we live in a much different time than Maugham did when he wrote this.
I was halfway through this book before I realized it was already too late for anything to happen in the story. After accepting that idea, I was able to revel in the beauty of the writing, and marvel at a world that no longer exists.
I am glad to have read this book, and I am glad it was written. Thinking about it in context; when this book came out, it must have been an absolute scandal. The tale is told worth a brio of earnest truth that makes me seriously wonder what was gained or lost with the passage of time.

Since the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges Supreme Court decision in 2015, sexual identity has dominated both public discourse and cultural trends — yet no historical phenomenon is its own cause. From Augustine to Marx, various views and perspectives have contributed to the modern understanding of the self.

Heady work for modern times
Revisado: 06-28-22
This is a thorough and well considered examination of the forces at play in our society now and the sources of the critical features of historical philosophy that make seemingly impossible assumptions possible.
This is not a message of faith, it is a warning that the realms of faith are under assault from quarters we would not guess, from the past and the weakness that makes us human.
This is not a suicide note, but a warning that we must renew and reaffirm our faith in an unchanging God, a pivot on which the future turns

Historia
In The War on the West, Douglas Murray shows how many well-meaning people have been fooled by hypocritical and inconsistent anti-West rhetoric. After all, if we must discard the ideas of Kant, Hume, and Mill for their opinions on race, shouldn’t we discard Marx, whose work is peppered with racial slurs and anti-Semitism? Embers of racism remain to be stamped out in America, but what about the raging racist inferno in the Middle East and Asia?

Revisado: 05-13-22
For anyone interested in finding out more about the vagaries of the situation in America, and the west, at this time, this book offers an easy guide to the good things here. It would be difficult to refute the actual arguments, though, if you were of a mind to do so, it would probably be easy to twist words to make of them what they are not.
There are logical conclusions to explicit statements from interested factions that CANNOT be refuted, these will simply be ignored.
That should tell you where we are as a culture, pretty grim

Historia
In her groundbreaking reporting, Naomi Klein introduced the term "disaster capitalism." Whether covering Baghdad after the U.S. occupation, Sri Lanka in the wake of the tsunami, or New Orleans post-Katrina, she witnessed something remarkably similar. People still reeling from catastrophe were being hit again, this time with economic "shock treatment," losing their land and homes to rapid-fire corporate makeovers. The Shock Doctrine retells the story of the most dominant ideology of our time, Milton Friedman's free market economic revolution.

Woof, woof said the puppy dog.
Revisado: 04-04-22
This was suggested subject matter reading on the subject of government-big business interference with markets, but this book does not stand up to the intervening 22 years of public discourse.
This book never becomes aware of it's own arguments well enough to understand that it is making an full throated argument against big government and socialism.
The author complains throughout about stripping away public dollars from incompetent government programs and sending the money to private companies to get the job done. She uses THIS as an example of corruption, and never makes the next single logical step to 'Maybe the government should not have this much power' .
Hard to work it into the review, but there is a marked change in tone in the last section where Israel is discussed. It gets straight to the anti-Semitism, at one point suggesting that the output of the Israeli people was lackluster before the Russian jewry moved in to the rescue after the fall of the Soviet Union.
This book reads like it was written by someone who is repeating their senior year in high school, and they are really going to nail the term paper because they saw something that happened, and they will apply their misshapen logic to a lot off other things where it does not apply

Historia
When the famous German author Sebastian Haffner died at the age of 91 in 1999, a manuscript was discovered among his unpublished papers. The book was begun in 1939, but with the advent of World War II, Haffner had set it aside. His family made the decision to publish it, and the book became a best seller in Germany in 2002. Spanning the period from 1907 to 1933, it offers a unique perspective on how the average educated German grappled with the rise of Hitler.

Spooky
Revisado: 09-16-21
This is a tale, told in the earnest tones of an ideologue, that haunts me with the understanding of how Nazis are made. Some are excited into existence like the fundamental particles of physics, and some are baked slowly at a carefully prescribed temperature, for a well-studied time.
I have been looking out at the landscape of political rhetoric for the last several weeks and seem fervor, for the first time, that I cannot match. There is too much excitement, inducement to outage.
Pressure is building, and a safe vent should be found, lest uncontrolled release put our republic in danger
