I have followed this series from the beginning. When it was about one superhuman, it was good. That kind of storyline is difficult to maintain however, and filling a book like this with subplots and numerous characters serves only to diminish the original point. Add a narrator who finds it necessary to emote on every plain declarative sentence, and you come up with a waste of time. See you Nowhere, Evan.

Disappointing

As often happens when large numbers of characters are attached to essentially one person series, the main character gets a little lost. Think about the Grey Man when first introduced. He could do miraculous things and did them alone, which was equally miraculous. This story turns him into just another high level special forces soldier. Ho Hum.

A huge disappointment

I have read or listened to all of this series and loved or at least liked each book. That said, this one stinks. I had to force myself to finish it. I have read many series, and am aware that reference is often made to previous books. Here, they are gone into in detail to the degree that it stops the flow completely. The story is really a hodgepodge of different stories in serious need of editing. IQ himself has been reborn as a relentless whiner. It is the same reader as usual, so I have to assume he was more irritating because of what he was reading. Altogether a sad and surprising waste of time.

Mostly Ballard, who frankly isn't as interesting as Bosch. it looks like Connelly is looking to transition to all Ballard. Good luck with that.

I am a big fan of Ignatius. But this one sacrifices story and drama too much to minutiae of computer science. I finished it just because I do. The ending is perfunctory and unbelievable.

Disappointing

Loved all the others. This one was disjointed and the prose was often clumsy. Too much going on, not enough continuity. I like the characters, so I'd read any others, but this one is just not up to par.

Huge disappointment

The alternating first person/ third person narration is a colossal failure. The first person segments are stilted puerile and inane. I have enjoyed previous books in the series. If this is anindication of things to come, I'm out.

Best one yet

I'm reading them in order, so can't speak to the later ones, but this is the best yet. Same beautiful writing, same fascinating women, same unmoored Brodie. Even more loose ends to fly together from all directions. And the narration is perfect. A real treat.

A Seattle story

A lot of the humor and most of the snark very Seattle-centric. Funny, though. The build-up took quite a while, and led to somewhat hurried mood changes, but overall clever and enjoyable. Performance, including some surprise singing, was out of this world.
