Recently I discovered how much a love dragon shifting and then I stumbled upon this gem and I’m in love. Rufus, red dragon whose hoard is his LIBRARY meets Mark, student who just wants to be worthy of studying. Mark meets Rufus in dragon form on accident and helps him out of some fishing wire and it turns out Rufus just wants Mark. HEA for this couple and now I’m for sure invested in this series.

Back in one of my favorite cities, Gaynor Beach - which couldn’t be gayer- we finally (well me, this is a me issue) get the story of Colin and James. I’ve read these totally out of order but it was an absolute delight to go back and see how their relationship evolves. Colin is alone with his bulldog widget (I can’t even spell her pompous first name, but widget fits) with a critical medical issue (liver failure due to hep c) after having been ostracized from his family, and James is just there to help out. This is a - to some extent by necessity - a slow burn as these two really develop their relationship above all else. It’s almost like everyone else knows they’re in a relationship before they do. But Colin gets a family (and a liver) and these two get their HEA. For the record, five stars for the portrayal of the medical issue. Overall quite realistic so didn’t detract for me at all.

Anthony is book 8 in the single dads of gaynor beach, a multi-author series, but can absolutely be read as a stand alone. Having read some of the other Gaynor beach books by Gabbi Grey, I had some inkling of the characters in this one but there’s enough back story or the characters are minor enough that it’s not noticeable. I actually read/listened to this before Hugh - which is book number 4 - and I highly highly recommend this and I’ll tell you why. I really, really didn’t like Anthony and I think his redemption would have been much more difficult had I read Hugh first. Does Hugh take place temporally first? Yes. Do the plots tie together? Also yes. Do I still recommend reading Anthony first, absolutely yes. Anthony is a social worker who was hard on one of his clients who subsequently overdosed and everyone blamed Anthony for her overdose. While that’s inherently problematic and I understand that, seeing how he interacted with Oscar and Hugh in Hugh …. Ugh. No. So open with him trying to redeem himself by helping an unsuspecting Scott with two toddler he didn’t know he had? It works. He sort of goes to help Scott and then basically never leaves. But watching him figure his stuff out and deal with some of his past issues - some of which just show up at the door - and how he loves those kids, well it works. As a slight sidenote, Anthony’s dad gets admitted to the hospital and the doc realizes he has a DNR so somehow he doesn’t get treatment? DNR and end of life care are not the same and often confused, and this perpetuated that erroneous belief in my perception. That being said, it really didn’t detract from the overall story too much. Glad they all got their found family.

Now Hugh I read/listened to after Anthony and I’m so glad I did because wow. I do not Anthony here. I do love Hugh’s even temperament and approach to problems and people (and it fits his personality for me - not jumping the gun and giving people a chance, trusting your instincts - it all works). Oscar has really been THROUGH IT. In the past week he lost his best friend, became a single dad and met his best friend’s father that he sort of has a crush on. It’s not advertised as such but Oscar seems a bit demi and this is a slow slow slow burn (almost no burn) but that works fine for the story. At no point do I think Anthony even has any regrets, so while I don’t think it’s his “fault” Patty died, I also didn’t find him even a little likeable. I love the dynamics between Hugh and Oscar and Oscar’s family and how they all just end up figuring it out. This is an age-gap, interracial relationship with at least one Demi character (maybe two really) featuring a history of substance use (not on page), an overdose (not on page, not MC, but the thing that brings these two together), a nearly unredeemable social worker and two guys just figuring it out. Also, sidenote, one of the story plot points was the baby getting pneumonia and initially it seemed like we’re saying it was black mold and then like 2 chapters later (making that up, but it seems like a long time) finally saying that the antibiotics are not for the black mold - which is totally correct. I wish that had been stated earlier as it was a little distracting medically and sort of seeming that they were linking the two together. But I supposed a parent would also do that too. Either way, high marks for Hugh.

In this third installment of the Creative Types series, we find Tag and Jay finding friendship as they are cast as the lead roles in a play together. Both come from very different places - Tag is trying to make it and this will have a significant impact on his future career as well as trying to figure out financially how to make this all work, whereas Jay’s struggles are much more emotional. He’s already starred in a hit series but has some scars from an experience with a play when he was less experienced that he has to work through. As you may imagine, their friendship ultimately gets both of them where they need to be. My favorite part is watching Jay slowly realize how diametrically opposed he and Tag’s current living situations are. That dawning realization and biting insight really does propel the two closer together. Ultimately both will have to make some choices - you can see this train wreck coming - but by putting each other first everyone is going to come out ahead. I’ve read/listened to books two and three of this series, looking forward to going back to book one. Had a hard time putting this one down (metaphorically- actually had a hard time hitting stop)
at the end.

I’ve read - and enjoyed - Knight’s contemporary novels, so I thought I’d give this a whirl. While the other books have had more angst, How to Survive A Summoning is FUNNY. At times raunchy, saucy humor, but definitely humor. This is my first demon/human pairing and yes, please. Jamie finds himself in a bit of a pickle while being chased by a ghoul who caught him stealing from the house the ghoul was protecting. Jamie was trapped but had the stolen summoning amulet and bam! He makes a deal with a demon. Lyn (they/them), a very fashion forward demon, makes another pact with Jamie to get their amulet back after it disappeared while they escaped. Who knew Jamie would summon his fated-mate? Overall designed to be a quick read spanning only a couple of days, this book is what I wanted it to be - fast, funny, and fabulous.

Coddiwomple - to travel in a purposeful manner toward a vague destination. This is my second SE Harmon book and won’t be my last. I’d seen it recommended before so when the opportunity to listen to the audible book came up, I took it and didn’t look back. Typically I listen to audio books I have already read since I don’t have great auditory retention so I follow the story better, but with this one I was caught from the beginning and had “trouble putting it down” (why does work always get in the way?!?). Second chances isn’t always my go-to trope but it’s just so well done here. Journey comes home because his larger than life father had a stroke and stays “for the summer” to help care for him despite their semi-contentious relationship. He and his family fall into old patterns - and he also falls into old patterns with his ex-fiancé Cameron who now lives next door. They agree to have a fling, but Cameron - though not explicitly stated - is demisexual and is really not cut out for a fling (and knows it). Journey has to make some decisions and is going to have to deal with some old family hurts to get what he really wants in the end - Cameron. Great story, great characters, great listen.

I saw this recommended and was intrigued so when the opportunity came to listen to the audio and review, I jumped at the chance. It’s a slightly paranormal (though I really kept thinking there would be more) novel featuring Kit, Ethan, and a band of their making trekking through the jungle to find a lost city and gold. This books has it all - a major medical problem (epilepsy); close family member dying; hx of parental death; jungle trekking; an evil ex…partner working for some sort of a cartel boss who does his best to interfere in the quest, and a nod to taboo with the ex stepbrothers theme. I loved the relationship dynamics between the two MCs - just loads of snark accompanied by endless devotion. Just an overall great listen.

I need a nap - in the best way

I don’t even know where to begin with this. Part three of a series that just really really puts you through all the angst and then some. Do not read this if you haven’t read books one and two - it does not stand alone. As with the others heed the TW because it will absolutely rip your heart out and not be put back together until basically the epilogue. There is sexual assault, physical assault, ptsd, on page death of a parent, hx of death of a parent by suicide, relationship cheating, we were on a break cheating, child abandonment, child abuse, a skosh of alcoholism - just really if you think it and its badness it’s probably referenced somewhere in these books. That being said Silas and Ben do finally get their HEA and it’s as messy and real and wonderful as you could hope. I will say there are again some audio changes / rewrites from the text so you cannot switch back and forth between reading and listening or you’ll get very confused. There was a semi substantial change in the relationship in between Silas and his mother between the text and the audio version. While harsher, I do prefer the original text but you can decide for yourself. Otherwise most major concepts remain consistent. I also prefer the pacing of the epilogue in the original text with a slight backstory on Silas and Ben’s reunion as adults whereas the audio really had two separate epilogues and two points in time. Again, neither really change the content just the focus and pacing. But boy oh boy you’re going to need a nap when this one is through because it will leave you rung out. I loved them all.

A previously published novella now out on audio, My Darcy is yet another win for Lily Morton. Though I’m not typically into novellas, this hits just right as it’s two best friends who do Jane Austen tours together and who figure out they are each attracted to the other. Freddie talks nonstop and Darcy lets him. With some amusing interactions involving the tourists and a dash of overnight heat Morton nails the best friends to lovers trope.
