Fun read, cringeworthy Italian accents
Revisado: 11-17-23
Entertaining read with some plot jokes and a couple of decent twists. I would put it in a "beach read" category. Descriptions of Sicily were breath-taking. But - oh - the way, way overdone Italian accents were painful! It was as if Chef Boyardee was narrating! Fortunately, the story was interesting enough to get past the accents.

Slow start, and I had to increase the listening speed by 20%, but well worth my time by the end. Beautiful story, beautifully told.

Great story, cringey narration
Revisado: 03-23-23
Loved the story which seems to have been carefully researched. Relatable and interesting characters. Found Theo's American New England accent to be so cringeworthy, I could barely get through it. Hard to imagine that Bridget's early motherhood experience could have been written by anyone who had ever experienced early motherhood, but she was not an important character. Overall, a good book. I will follow this author and hope for a different narrator on Audible versions.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Another masterpiece by Barbara Kingsolver. Love that we now have a book that portrays Appalachians as humans vs cartoon characters. Great work.

Wow, wow, and wow!
Revisado: 08-20-21
This book is a life changer for me. I will admit upfront that Evelyn is self-absorbed, scheming, and obnoxious. I read this book in small bursts just because I couldn't take too much of Evelyn at a time. How could someone live their life everyday based on such a manipulated script? How do you look in the mirror everyday and see such a coward?
I will tell you that if you are looking for a book based on the glamorous life of a movie star and all of her star studded marriages, this is not the book for you.
However, if you are inspired by a story of someone struggling to live their life authentically - no matter what that means to anyone else - you may just be as moved by this book as I was.
Evelyn's life is complicated, messy, and often ugly - much of it based in different cultural times. You will be inclined to judge her in a negative light, but if you stop reading anywhere before the last word, you have missed the entire premise of this book.
I love this author. I love this book. I predict it will have a great impact on my life. It is truly a work of art.

Some difficulty with narration
Revisado: 11-07-20
The narrator didn’t not have a lot of difference in tone for some characters. Difficult to follow for that reason. Once I watched the movie and got some idea of the plot, it became easier to tell who was speaking.
Wonderful novel but would suggest a different narrator.

She was also deeply in love with an American suitor when her mother chose instead for her to fulfill her social ambitions and marry an English Duke. Leaving her life in America, she came to England as the Duchess of Marlborough in 1895 and took up residence in her new home: Blenheim Palace. Not so much
Revisado: 04-27-20
I am obsessed with The Gilded Age and am very interested in Consuelo Vanderbilt’s life. She has quite a story, but it wasn’t told here. Maybe it is typical of women’s styles of communication of the day. More of a diary than examining any feelings she may have had about being forced into a marriage against her will and living in a very unhappy marriage for some time.
The narrator of the Audible version has a sophisticated delivery but lacks much variation in tone. It was pretty dull listening.
I feel like Edith Wharton’s “The Buccaneers” portrayed these young American girls sold into British peerage much more effectively.
I did enjoy her harrowing experiences in France during WWII, but I probably could have skipped the rest.

Historia
A body always tells a story - but this child’s was a blank page. Rita reached for the lantern. She trained its light on the child’s face. "Who are you?" she murmured, but the face said as little as the rest of her. It was impossible to tell whether, in life, these blunt and unfinished features had borne the imprint of prettiness, timid watchfulness, or sly mischief. If there had once been curiosity or placidity or impatience here, life had not had time to etch it into permanence. Only a very short time ago, the body and soul of this little girl had still been securely attached.

In the beginning of this audio book, the voices were SO annoying and the story was so flat, I nearly returned the book. Once “it” happened, the story was engrossing. Hang in there with it!
