Historia
For Stella Fortuna, death has always been a part of life. Stella’s childhood is full of strange, life-threatening incidents - moments where ordinary situations like cooking eggplant or feeding the pigs inexplicably take lethal turns. Even Stella’s own mother is convinced that her daughter is cursed or haunted. When the Fortunas emigrate to America on the cusp of World War II, Stella and her sister, Tina, must come of age side by side in a hostile new world with strict expectations for each of them.

By chapter 5, I wanted to kill her!!!
Revisado: 07-28-24
I tried skipping ahead but it just got worse and worse. The writing was good and I enjoyed the first few chapters. Then it started going down hill, digging it's depressing man hating hole and never recovered. I gave up at chapter 6.and will try to return the book.

Historia
The Trail is a moving story of how nature helps us find what’s missing in our lives. The tale begins with Gil, who in the wake of his father’s death and recently fired from his job, agrees to accompany his father’s old hiking partner Syd on a month-long trek on the John Muir Trail. There’s just one problem: Gil hates camping and is woefully unprepared for the rigors of the journey. Moreover, he soon learns Syd may not survive the hike.

predictable and juvenile
Revisado: 04-20-23
I have read and enjoyed many books evolving, hiking, trecking survival, etc, and learned quite a bit, but somehow, this one missed the mark. I couldn't wait for it to end, but I was on a trip and didn't have access to anything else. Maybe it was the annoying main character who seemed much more like a 12 year old rather than a 20 something adult. The long ramblings of his "wise" oldr trail partner at EVERY TURN, became unbarable quickly. Maybe use this as forced punishment for a teen, on a long trip, but expect it to get tossed out the window! The facts about John Muir trail were interesting, but not enough to redeem this book.

Historia
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

interesting story, but
Revisado: 01-11-23
An Interisting story, but hard to form a bond with any of the many characters. There were too many story lines that felt predictable, and including race relations at every turn seemed forced and added nothing of substance to the story. The ending just seemed like an add-on for effect, which failed.
It didn't help that the narrator sounded like he was reading a childs story, then several of the NY accents and other amarican accents were just grating.
I loved several of Mrs. Brooks other books but was disappointed in this one.

Historia
Near the end of her life, Mary Mann Hamilton (1866-c.1936) was encouraged to record her experiences as a female pioneer. The result is the only known firsthand account of a remarkable woman thrust into the center of taming the American South - surviving floods, tornadoes, and fires; facing bears, panthers, and snakes; managing a boardinghouse in Arkansas that was home to an eccentric group of settlers; and running a logging camp in Mississippi that blazed a trail for development in the Mississippi Delta.

Revisado: 04-14-22
to many characters with names that only a native from Korea could remember, most were to dull to want to remember. All but one ended up with unhappy lives , and that one dissappeared from the story as soon as things looked up for her. at least it did help put me to sleep.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

Revisado: 09-03-20
This is a true love story / adventure between humans, the wildlife and their threatened home of Africa. You cannot help but fall in love with the land and each of the animals and of course Francois and her purserverance to continue their dream of a wildlife preserve, and rehabilitation center, after her dear husband Lawrence's passing. I wanted to jump on a plane and head directly for Tula Tula after finishing this book, maybe some day.

Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her - but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North.

although this wasn't one of my favorite books the performance of Joe Morton made it well worth the listen. I think the dream feel of the story is what I did not like or quite understand.
