Historia
London, 1772: a young artist called Thomas Rowlandson is making his way through the grimy backstreets of the capital, on his way to begin his studies at the Royal Academy Schools. Within a few years, James Gillray and Isaac Cruikshank would join him in Piccadilly, turning satire into an artform, taking on the British establishment, and forever changing the way we view power. Set against a backdrop of royal madness, political intrigue, the birth of modern celebrity, French revolution, American independence and the Napoleonic Wars, UPROAR! follows the satirists as they lampoon those in power.

British Political Cartoonists of the turn of the 19th century
Revisado: 01-23-25
Book relates the lives of these satirical print makers who stood out for the academic traing they applied to their work. Three cartoonists are the main focus. I thought the narration was more workmanlike than expressive but still overall enjoyed the story.

Historia
Latitude is a gloriously exciting tale of adventure and scientific discovery that has never been told before. Nicholas Crane, the former president of the Royal Geographic Society, documents the remarkable expedition undertaken by a group of 12 European adventurer-scientists in the mid-18th century. The team spent years in South America, scaling volcanoes and traversing jungles, before they achieved their goal of establishing the exact shape of the Earth by measuring the length of one degree latitude at the equator.

Both an adventure sort & a tale of success despite dysfunction
Revisado: 06-30-23
In the 1730s and 40s a French/Spanish team dispatched to what is now Ecuador showed that the Earth bulges at the equator. They did so despite a considerable difficulty in working together, never mind the lesser difficulties of untreatable diseases, difficult terrain, unhelpful weather, and altitude sickness. The nominal leader of the French contingent was a technically able and administratively inept person who repeatedly lost control of the expedition to more experienced team members, who also had difficulty cohering into a team. Sometimes horrifying, such as the casual attitude of the team members towards buying slaves and their . . . measured concern for the welfare of their legally free servants, but also frequently amusing.

Historia
In Gotham, Edwin G. Burrows and Mike Wallace have produced a monumental work of history, one that ranges from the Indian tribes that settled in and around the island of Manna-hata, to the consolidation of the five boroughs into Greater New York in 1898. It is an epic narrative, a story as vast and as varied as the city it chronicles, and it underscores that the history of New York is the story of our nation. The events and people who crowd this audiobook guarantee that this is no mere local history. It is in fact a portrait of the heart and soul of America....

Massive and Entertaining
Revisado: 06-28-23
The authors succeeded in writing a huge narrative history while keeping this listener from boredom. They interweave the life experiences of individuals from the lower end to definitely the highest point of the social hierarchy. A wide range of topics beyond the local political history are covered, including popular entertainment, education, the growth of the German , Irish, Catholic and Jewish populations, and the frequently most unpleasant actions taken against the African-American populations.

Historia
In Firmament, atmospheric scientist and science communicator Simon Clark offers a rare and accessible tour of the ins and outs of the atmosphere and how we know what we know about it. From the workings of its different layers to why carbon dioxide is special, from pioneers like Pascal to the unsung heroes working in the field to help us understand climate change, Firmament introduces us to an oft-overlooked area of science and not only lays the ground work for us to better understand the debates surrounding the climate today.

Very nice introduction to history of atmospheric science
Revisado: 06-28-23
I enjoyed this combination of an introduction to atmospheric science and the history of western (including Muslim civilizations) thinking about the atmosphere. Considering the number of years covered it is remarkably concise and yet introduced me to aspects of the subject I had not read about elsewhere. Most of the discussion of climate change is restricted to the last couple of chapters.

Fatal Flight brings vividly to life the year of operation of R.101, the last great British airship - a luxury liner three and a half times the length of a 747 jet, with a spacious lounge, a dining room that seated 50, glass-walled promenade decks, and a smoking room.

How not to project manage
Revisado: 05-19-23
Lets see here- we start with a concept of dubious merit (tie the empire together with airships!; never mind the long sequence already of disasters),fail to solve the most pressing technical issue (leaky and fragile gasbags), add less relevant and unneeded innovations that are subsequently removed to save weight (weight which wouldn’t be an issue if you hadn’t overbuilt the frame), and leave an alcoholic with a proven record of ill-judgment in a important management position, and add political pressure to get your past deadline moving though the vehicle remains poorly tested. No surprise then if disaster strikes.
