Historia
On a dark, wet evening in Dublin, scientist and mother of four Eilish Stack answers her front door to find the GNSB on her step. Two officers from Ireland’s newly formed secret police are here to interrogate her husband, a trade unionist. Ireland is falling apart. The country is in the grip of a government turning towards tyranny and when her husband disappears, Eilish finds herself caught within the nightmare logic of a society that is quickly unravelling. How far will she go to save her family? And what – or who – is she willing to leave behind?

Gripping and tense
Revisado: 07-27-24
What a book. I was gripped with a permanent feeling of angst in chest whilst listening to this book. It is wonderfully written and even though you know that something ominous is happening, you struggle to come to terms with just how sinister it is. Much like Ilish, I found myself hoping for a better outcome even though I knew this was not to be.

Historia
Ted Wallace is an old, sour, womanising, cantankerous, whisky-sodden beast of a failed poet and drama critic, but he has his faults too. Fired from his newspaper, months behind on his alimony payments and disgusted with a world that undervalues him, Ted seeks a few months repose and free drink at Swafford Hall, the country mansion of his old friend Lord Logan. But strange things have been going on at Swafford....

Overly vulgar
Revisado: 07-07-24
I found this book hard to follow and listen to. I could not really get to grips with the story (I did not finish the book) but felt like the vulgarity was used as a disguise for a weak story. I was pretty disappointed.

Historia
In Unruly, David Mitchell explores how early England's monarchs, while acting as feared rulers firmly guiding their subjects' destinies, were in reality a bunch of lucky sods who were mostly as silly and weird in real life as they appear to us today in their portraits.

The understated humor and everyday similes stood out, as well as the clear explanation of the essence of a complicated subject.

A bit rushed
Revisado: 12-06-23
I love David Mitchell’s humour and it did shine through magnificently in this book but I felt the narration was a bit of a ramble. I found it hard to follow the successions as it felt quite rushed. Maybe rather a reading book than a listening book.
