Wonderful again
Revisado: 09-02-22
It’s been some years since I first began this series. It’s as good if not better as I begin it again. It’s nice that there are some things upon which one can rely for action, humor, guys doing right, and just entertainment.

It was to be the war to end all wars, and it began at 11:15 on the morning of June 28, 1914, in an outpost of the Austro-Hungarian Empire called Sarajevo. It would officially end nearly five years later. Unofficially, however, it has never ended: Many of the horrors we live with today are rooted in the First World War. The Great War left millions of civilians and soldiers maimed or dead. It also saw the creation of new technologies of destruction: tanks, planes, and submarines; machine guns and field artillery; poison gas and chemical warfare.

Worth the effort.

For my tastes this was a wonderful and thorough history. It was a bit dry at times but I found the descriptions of the overwhelming brutality was moving, even though the writing style does not change. It was well worth the listen.

Richard Sharpe returns to the battlefields of the Iberian Peninsula, where he and his men bravely fight the French invasion into Portugal in 1809. The world-renowned Sharpe series is now available with gorgeous packaging for a new generation of readers and listeners. A few years after Richard Sharpe’s heroic exploits on the battlefields of Trafalgar, Sharpe finds himself once again in Portugal, fighting the savage armies of Napoleon Bonaparte, as they try to bring the whole of the Iberian Peninsula under their control.

Sir William Strongstaff is dead, and the defender of England and its kings is no longer there to battle the French. His chosen knight, Sir Michael of Weedon, is removed as the new king’s bodyguard, and he is sent to France, where the king’s uncles are trying to finish the job begun by King Henry V. From the outset, Sir Michael and his men are beset by treachery and intrigue. The line between ally and enemy appears to be almost invisible. The struggle is not only for England’s crown, but also the French one!

When I started book 1 in this series I was somewhat disappointed. It wasn’t Bernard Cornwall. However after a time the story “got me” and here I am at the last of the series. The prelude to the incidents and some battle scenes are a bit redundant but I didn’t mind that at all. I enjoyed this series.

New York Times bestselling author Alan Furst is widely recognized as master of the historical spy novel. Furst’s works are vivid evocations of long-forgotten heroes and feature plots that unfold to the inexorable cadence of history. Night Soldiers is a simultaneously thrilling and illuminating tale of espionage set in 1934.

Not my cup of tea. I prefer more action. The story did have some moments of tension but overall I do not think I will be listening to any more of this author’s books. A lot of tedious descriptions. Several times I was on the verge of quitting but given this authors success I kept hoping for an improvement that never came. A struggle to a not very satisfying end.

Historia
Critically acclaimed, perennial New York Times bestselling author Bernard Cornwell (Agincourt, The Fort, the Saxon Tales) makes real history come alive in his breathtaking historical fiction. Praised as "the direct heir to Patrick O'Brian" (Agincourt, The Fort), Cornwell has brilliantly captured the fury, chaos, and excitement of battle as few writers have ever done—perhaps most vividly in his phenomenally popular novels following the illustrious military career of British Army officer Richard Sharpe during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

The description of the book does not contai a very important aspect of this book. No spoiler alert necessary. For me that occurred in the first chapters. The protagonist is a serial murderer. No thank you. If I wanted dexter I’d get dexter which I would never do. Not for me.

This is the second book in a two book series. I am a committed Gabriel Allon fan so I thought I’d give this short series a try. I’ve been disappointed in the past when trying a book from a series author that was not part of the series. Not this time. After finishing the first book I went immediately to this one. Wonderful entertainment.
