The story itself wasn't bad although the plot lagged in parts. What really made it hard to get through was the narration. The narrator has an unnatural sounding cadence and ends a lot of sentences on a higher note, as though she's asking a question. It was distracting.

I'll say that the first part of the book held my attention much better than the last half. His thoughts on his mother were poignant and the only part of the book that felt "real". Otherwise, it was filled with whining and paranoia and felt like it was written to fit their narrative (because c'mon, he didn't write this with zero input from Meghan). Definitely written to paint themselves in the best possible light. I went into it hoping to feel sympathetic to his story and ended up irritated I spent the credit.

Had this been the first Philippa Gregory novel I'd ever read, I doubt I'd have ever read another. As it is, I doubt I'll continue this trilogy. The main character of Beatrice Lacey is so unforgivable - there is nothing relatable or sympathetic. I didn't realize incest was such a main plot device and parts of this novel were hard to listen to. The saving grace is the narration of Emma Powell, who did a fantastic job bringing so many unlikable characters to life.

I loved this book growing up and thought it would be fun to revisit it. The story is interesting and well-done, as far as YA novels go, especially when compared to how many these days focus on romance. My problem is with the narrator. She has a lilt to her sentences, especially when trying to give each character a unique voice (and failing to do so) that grates on the ears. It's almost as though she's trying to ask a question. If this weren't such a short book, and one I was already familiar with, I probably wouldn't have finished it based on the narration alone.

I've been a fan of Alison Weir for some time now and will continue to be; however, this story was a struggle to finish. The narrator has a glaring lisp that grates on the ears and while her voice is not unpleasant, the lips is distracting and she is oddly breathy at times. I would not listen to a book narrated by Julia Franklin again, regardless of who the author is.

The story was fine - fun fluff. The only thing that made it difficult to finish was the narator's awfuk British accent(s), especially for the character of Cilla. it came and went and was distracting.
