Historia
My whole world changed when I stepped inside the academy. Nothing is right about this place or the other students in it. Here I am, a mere mortal among gods...or monsters. I still can't decide which of these warring factions I belong to, if I belong at all. I only know the one thing that unites them is their hatred of me. Then there's Jaxon Vega. A vampire with deadly secrets who hasn't felt anything for a hundred years.

ugh af -also spoilers
Revisado: 09-13-22
i wasted a credit on this based on a recommendation and really, really wished i hadn't. all the other reviews saying this is a mix of Twilight and Harry Potter are not wrong - its just a far less enjoyable experience than those. Grace (mc) is just a re-do of Bella in Twilight, with more "hot af" thrown in. Jaxon (mc) is a re-do of Edward. i get if the author is a fan of Twilight and HP but geez, could have been more original. the guy narrator sounded way too old to be pulling off a teenage voice full of angst. the girl narrator tried. idk. no one sounded the ages they were supposed to be. save your money/credit and just listen to Twilight or HP.

Dying of cancer and worried about his immortal soul, that rascal Jack confesses his long list of sins to the Reverend Nigel. The stunned but sympathetic clergyman convinces Jack that his most heinous sin was perpetrated on his daughters, who believe that he committed suicide. Both men agree that seeing their father suddenly reappear, only to die a painful death shortly after, would cause additional harm.

eh, not as good as the first two
Revisado: 07-18-22
spoilers....
i really enjoyed the first two books, but this one seemed to lack....something. can't exactly put my finger on it, but it wasn't as enjoyable as the first two.
maybe it was all the added poetry (used a filler maybe? maybe the author had a deadline to get it done, and just didnt really want to write a conclusion?)
it seemed the first books were building up to find out the dad was alive, then Charlie didn't. or that the mom and dad were going to see each other alive, but didnt. kind of let down.

clueless main character
Revisado: 04-27-22
i struggled with liking and supporting the main characer Jane. throughout the entire book, until the last few chapters, i just wanted to reach in and smack some sense into her. she was foggy, clueless, and oblivious to what was going on around her. that alone made the story hard to keep listening to and frustrating. idk if that was the authors intent? i get why the story was drawn out (to some extent) but not much of a mystery, it was easy to figure out what happened in the past and what was going on in current time. this is the first book i have listened to by this author and am hesitant to listen to more based on this alone.

spoiler alert
Revisado: 09-01-21
kinda bummed i wasted a credit on this one as i really enjoyed the first two books of the Carolina Chronicles, but this one seemed lacking.
the narrator does a decent job but does not try to change her voice or accent for the characters . without chapter titles, it was sometimes hard to tell between "real time " and Alice's letters.
i felt like the story was incomplete as the author does not explain what Mark does to get Tag to back off and a lot of the book deals with the worries and stress of what is going to happen to her restaurant in MI while she is in NC. and no really savvy businessman is going to just back off after being told to leave one time if he really wants the property. that situation seemed incomplete as well.

holy crap on a cracker!
Revisado: 06-16-21
so many twists and turns in the story! just when you think you have it figured out -- you don't! it did take some getting used to the stage directions and how Claire uses her acting exeriences to set the stage during the story, but that was the only part i really didn't understand, but it all comes together.

excellent story, but hard to hear
Revisado: 07-01-19
If you like Susanna Kearsley, you will love this book. However, if you are hard of hearing, you will struggle to hear the narrator. She speaks in quite whispers throughout the story that makes it hard to hear or understand.
