The Little People
Revisado: 03-15-25
It t is hard to get past the politics. The stop over in South Africa was amazing. where the author tells us about the virtues of apartheid and how the kind Afrikaners generously provide jobs for the Africans. To see the native peoples as his children is also over the top. In addition the idea of what it means to be a Christian is a bit much . Aside from the politics the story line is disjointed and does not go deeply into the areas where it would be most interesting. This does not take away from the great service and patriotism of the author whom we should all honor.

Historia
The ancient Sibylline prophecies had foretold that the Roman Empire would last for 1000 years. As the time for the expected dissolution approached in the middle of the third century AD, the empire was lapsing into chaos, with seemingly interminable civil wars over the imperial succession. The western empire had seceded under a rebel emperor and the eastern empire was controlled by another usurper. Barbarians took advantage of the anarchy to kill and plunder all over the provinces.

It could have been so much more. Instead of dealing with the protagonist in a clear coherent manner the book jumped around trying to fill up space with simplistic historical facts. Prepare to be bored.

Attempting to finish up all of Eliot's writings I listened to this In the public domain book ( which they broadcast after each chapter) . In this book Eliot has nothing to describe and no plot to follow. Her thoughts and mind starts to wonder and never stops. She gets more convoluted as she attempts to follow an idea. The only person that should be exposed to this book should have been Eliot herself in a private domain of one

Historia
First published in 1905, The Varieties of Religious Experience is a collection of lectures given at the University of Edinburgh in 1901 and 1902. William James was a psychologist and, as such, his interest in religion was not that of a theologian but of a scientist. In these 20 lectures, he discusses the nature and origin of religious belief. The average believer is one who has inherited his religion, but this will not do for James's inquiry.

like brother Henry the use of language to create a jungle of words that one has to hack through to get at the meaning is distracting..Henry however unlike his brother can create beautiful mental images. Long unwieldy quotes, a narrator who has a sing song style who can not pronounce foreign languages makes this audiobook all but unlistenable.

Historia
As Adolf Hitler and the Nazis seduced a nation, bullied a continent, and attempted to exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside. One of these was Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and author. In this New York Times bestselling biography, Eric Metaxas takes both strands of Bonhoeffer's life—the theologian and the spy—and draws them together to tell a searing story of incredible moral courage in the face of monstrous evil.

It is sad that such a compelling story is told so poorly. The Nazi criminals are portrayed as cartoon caricatures. The story often drifts into tangential sidetracks. It is padded and verbose as well as preachy. I counted the minutes until it finally ended!

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.
