Historia
After the latest mission of the starship Flying Dutchman, Earth is safe not just for a year, but for hundreds of years. The ship’s weary crew wonders what they will do with their lives in peacetime, but the enemy has other plans, and there is danger on the Homefront. Starring Zachary Quinto, R.C. Bray, Kate Mulgrew, Robert Picardo, and everyone's favorite AI, Skippy the Magnificent, alongside a full cast. Includes plenty of pew-pew-pew, original sound composition, and maybe some singing by R.C. Bray.

Horrid overdone effects, acting, and noise.
Revisado: 02-11-25
Wow, did THAT suck.
Overwrought.
Overacted.
Overused sound effects.
Over-warped voice distortion.
Over-loud score.
Just … Overdone.
I really enjoyed Craig Alanson’s Expeditionary Force books before this one. This farce smacks of some director or producer feeling the need to wrap their name around a reasonable short story by slapping paint, clowns, and loud music on it to claim they contributed value. Horrid.

Historia
In this first book in a dramatic new spy series, Robinson is covertly deployed by the CIA in a deniable operation to handle one of its biggest assets in the Kremlin—recruited by her. But instead, she finds herself grappling to get to the bottom of an apparent threat that seems likely to engulf the White House. The mission becomes unexpectedly, and deeply, personal for Robinson . . . Can she outwit one of the Russian foreign intelligence service's most deadly operatives? Nothing is what it seems in this vortex of deception and deceit.

Refreshing, creative, timely
Revisado: 11-26-24
Possible Spoiler Alert.
This is my first read by Andrew Turpin, on a suggestion from Audible. It was refreshingly fast paced and positive storytelling that never ceased driving forward. It was very topical and timely in tackling the weaknesses in the US voting system. A very creative tack on exploiting mid levels of a bureaucracy. Also a creative idea using deniable intelligence asset(s). A good and enjoyable read.

Historia
The Hygrometric Dehabitation Region, or the "Zone," is a growing band of rainforest on the equator, where the heat and humidity make it impossible for warm-blooded animals to survive. A human being without protection in the Zone is dead in minutes. Twenty years ago, Marks went into the rainforest with a group of researchers led by Doctor Elaine Fell, to study the extraordinary climate and see if it could be used in agriculture. The only thing she learned was that the Zone was no place for people. There were deaths, and the program was cut short. Now, they're sending her back in.

Eerily prescient. Less SF than prognosis.
Revisado: 08-10-24
Another excellent book by Adrian Tchaikovsky. A frightening fable of where our planet very well may be going in the all too near future. What if climate change continues unabetted: who will inherit the world, and how?
Wonderful narrator voice but too shrill and frantic for the protagonist in times of stress.

Interesting Story, Hard To Understand Narration.
Revisado: 07-04-24
The storyline was complex and well crafted, but I could not enjoy this audiobook. The narrator was of top quality, but the various patois and heavy (I guess) Creole speech throughout were very hard to follow and caused many story points to be missed by me. The narrator was a fine actress with wonderful range of accents, but the realistic shouting and wailing were, while in-context, were very problematic for earbuds/headphones; leading to lost lower-volume dialog after lunging for the volume control. I think I should have read the paperback.

The robot discovers they can also do something else they never did before: They can run away. Fleeing the household they enter a wider world they never knew existed, where the age-old hierarchy of humans at the top is disintegrating into ruins and an entire robot ecosystem devoted to human wellbeing is having to find a new purpose.

Humor, dark and foreboding. Quite timely.
Revisado: 06-16-24
Wonderful story, wonderful language, wonderful narration. This book masterfully combines sardonic wit, black comedy, and starkly cautionary, if heavy-handed, prophesying of human greed and ignorance, reflected in the very near future results of profit over ecology & intelligent limitation on AI. I would have liked it more if it was not so frighteningly likely.

Great performance. Getting sick of Brody
Revisado: 04-05-24
Marvelous detail in characters and military activity. An evolving plot that requires reading the first books, and urges continuing with the following books. Narration continues to be remarkable, bringing each character clearly and distinctly to life.
But let’s face it: Brody’s continual movie patter is annoying as hell, and distracts from his contribution to the missions. I suppose that’s the point…

Technically robust, tedious presentation
Revisado: 02-01-24
I’ve read all the Slough House books and loved them. This book, however, I found difficult to stay with. It is a slow moving psychological study of a microcosm of a larger international event.
Of particular irritation was the frequent jump of first person perspective accompanied by repeated text - dialogue or descriptive - two, three or more times. This copy-paste approach confounded my perspective leading to multiple, irritating re-reads to clarify.
The technical aspects of spy craft and international finance were well done. But the pace is less action-movie, more therapy session.

Simplistic Story, Boring Narration
Revisado: 01-01-24
I’m very much a fan of Andrew Mayne, but I found this story to be uncharacteristically simple and one-note. The narration was clear and precise but almost devoid of emotion, much less character distinction.
