Historia
It can be argued that one simple idea-the concept of freedom-has been the driving force of Western civilization and may be the most influential intellectual force the world has ever known. But what is freedom, exactly? These 36 engaging lectures tell the dramatic story of freedom from ancient Greece to our own day, exploring a concept so close to us we may never have considered it with the thoroughness it deserves.

Ruined by Religion + Sexism
Revisado: 07-05-24
My enthusiasm for learning about this topic was spoiled with the relentless justifications for religion and the unsurprising claims of gender essentialism in the form of biblical complementarianism that followed. Wish you found someone other than a sexist, religious zealot to give these lectures. If I was looking for that, I could go seek out some backwards, fundamentalist church. Big disappointment.

Historia
The hour is critical. The American republic is suffering its gravest crisis since the Civil War. Conflicts, hostility, and incivility now threaten to tear the country apart. Competing visions have led to a dangerous moment of cultural self-destruction. This is no longer politics as usual, but an era of political warfare where our enemies are not foreign adversaries, but our fellow citizens. Yet the roots of the crisis are deeper than many realize. Os Guinness argues that we face a fundamental crisis of freedom, as America's genius for freedom has become her Achilles' heel.

Waste of Time
Revisado: 07-04-23
I was excited about this book because I’ve been researching different perspectives on freedom; especially as they relate to America. I ended the book repulsed at the idea of living in a system modeled on the author’ vision of freedom. You can tell this was written by an older whites man since he’s obsessed with maintaining dominance hierarchies, traditions that maintain social order, patriarchal gender norms that oppress women and pushing religion down out throats every chance he gets. 🤮 Don’t want to have anything to do with any that! Don’t want to even passively accept the continuation of this distorted view of freedom. What a dystopia!

What all the sales messages?
Revisado: 01-27-23
I appreciated the topical subject matter but not all the promotional marketing testimonials placed between chapters. Who cares about recommendations from a bunch of actresses? Seriously! So cheesy it made me want to stop reading.

Historia
Here, anthropologist David Graeber presents a stunning reversal of conventional wisdom: He shows that before there was money, there was debt. For more than 5,000 years, since the beginnings of the first agrarian empires, humans have used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods - that is, long before the invention of coins or cash. It is in this era, Graeber argues, that we also first encounter a society divided into debtors and creditors.

Historia
Capital is currently cannibalizing every sphere of life-guzzling wealth from nature and racialized populations, sucking up our ability to care for each other, and gutting the practice of politics. In this tightly argued and urgent volume, leading Marxist feminist theorist Nancy Fraser charts the voracious appetite of capital, tracking it from crisis point to crisis point, from ecological devastation to the collapse of democracy, from racial violence to the devaluing of care work.

Historia
Capitalism has blessed the world with wealth and technological miracles. It has also cursed it with urban slums, powerless workers, and the vicious boom-and-bust economy. If only there were some way to fix the problems of capitalism and keep all its benefits. In 1897, Henry George published his solution to this puzzle, Progress and Poverty. He suggested that, unlike all other taxes, a tax on land doesn't discourage entrepreneurship. A single tax on land can raise the revenues we need to help the poor without destroying the incentive to create wealth.

Historia
The revised and updated edition of Lt. Col. Dave Grossman's modern classic about the psychology of combat, hailed by the Washington Post as "an illuminating account of how soldiers learn to kill and how they live with the experiences of having killed". In World War II, only 15 to 20 percent of combat infantry were willing to fire their rifles. In Korea, about 50 percent. In Vietnam, the figure rose to more than 90 percent. The good news is that most soldiers are loath to kill.

Weird Not to Mention the Killing of Women
Revisado: 10-26-22
Every day I see news stories about women getting killed by their male partners but there wasn’t a single sentence about it in this book. On a similar note, there’s a whole chapter about soldiers and PTSD when rape is a much larger cause of PTSD than combat. The conspicuous omissions in light of much contrary evidence left me with the impression that this is a sexist approach to the topic.

Solid Research But Uninspired Delivery
Revisado: 09-14-22
The author shares a compelling problem and lots of great information. Too bad he didn’t spend a little more time presenting it in a more engaging way. Investing more time to include a narrative arc, metaphor and personality would have taken this from good to great. The narrator’s deadpan delivery style doesn’t help.

Historia
In this extraordinary follow-up to the critically acclaimed The Lucifer Principle, Howard Bloom - one of today's preeminent thinkers - offers us a bold rewrite of the evolutionary saga. Global Brain is more than just a brilliantly original contribution to the ongoing debate on the inner workings of evolution; it is a "grand vision," says the eminent evolutionary biologist David Sloan Wilson, a work that transforms our very view of who we are and why.

Interesting but Redundant
Revisado: 09-05-22
Some cool ideas in here but for some reason the author recites the same quote about “those that haveth gain more, those that don’t haveth all taken away” around 7-9 times. While the quote is thought provoking, isn’t one of the meta goals of a “global brain” to evolve out of the unjust inequality embodied by the quote? I fail to understand why the author wants to celebrate this “might makes right” ethos with seems backwards and outdated.
