Another Franzen Gem

He’s the best we’ve got. And even though as a catholic cast-out I had trouble with all the religiosity - he dealt with it in such a nuanced and touching way I found myself saying - okay I get it - this is the comfort people derive from faith. But his true genius will always be his rich fully developed characters and his extraordinary dialogue. He’s out of my doghouse from Purity or whatever that last abomination was….the one that proved he was human after the genius of the Corrections and Freedom. Because I’m sure he cares that he was in my doghouse. And to be fair I love dogs so as far as doghouses go it was a comfy one with lots of treats and an overpriced doggie bed. Well done.

Somebody Please Die Already

How this thing is so frequently and positively reviewed is beyond me. “Richard” is like chewing on cardboard. Vanessa is as interesting as watching some idiot chew on cardboard. The plot is as barren as the Nebraskan plains (my apologies to Nebraska). I found myself willing someone to just frickin’ die and began to think that will soon be me by harakiri if I keep listening to this no-plot, no-character, lifeless mass of words forced into close proximity for god knows what purpose.

I wanted to care about the characters but they wouldn't allow such a thing. Not enough plot to carry the novel. Some lovely writing that meanders and loses its way. Characters are not developed enough to bemoan their passing.

Not Scalzi's best at all.

I love Scalzi, but most of this book is about as enjoyable as watching c-span. Way too much political bureaucracy posing as political intrigue. Reads like a bunch of loosely linked procedural manuals. Action and plot for that matter are fleeting and disappointing - footnotes really. Disappointing to say the least. Sorry John I'm still a fan but please no more like this.
