Nice try but falls short
Revisado: 10-26-21
I never got the point. What is the message here? In my opinion this story adds nothing new or even interesting to the "Silo" universe.

Historia
Hugo and Nebula Award finalist Robin Hobb crafts intricate fantasy tales featuring larger-than-life characters and exotic landscapes. Nevare Burvelle survives the King’s Cavalla Academy—where nepotism and corruption reign—to become a soldier in the Gernian king’s army. As he and his fellow soldiers are thrust onto the front lines of the king’s brutal territorial expansion campaign, they struggle against the Plainspeople—forest-dwellers who possess a powerful magic long dismissed by the Gernians.

Good story, but long winding
Revisado: 09-27-21
If you've read other books by Hobb you will know that she likes to take her time building vast universes and getting to know the characters in depth. I usually love her books for her ability to make people, places and events feel real. She does do that here too, but Nevarre is a hard person to like. His blind trust in authority and lack of a personality make him difficult to care about. Combined with the slow pace of the story in this first Soldier Son trilogy , I feel like this book could have benefitted from being shortened somewhat. I often found myself rolling my eyes at Nevarre, or wishing to skip long history lesson-ish sections that felt repetitive and boring. But the story is still compelling, and I admit to reading through it now for a second time. Even at her worst, Hobb is pretty darned good.

With the artistry and imagination her fans have come to expect, Hobb builds masterfully on all that has gone before, revealing devastating secrets and shocking conspiracies that cast a dark shadow over the history of Fitz and his world - a shadow that now stretches to darken all future hope.

Long book of Fitz being an idiot
Revisado: 07-15-21
I love this book still. like I do this whole series. But this book is long and the story seems more random than the others. Fitz is acting so blazingly idiotic that one must wonder if his brain is intact, as he was definitely brighter in the older books. The narrator is HORRIBLE. He makes a mock of some of the key characters by giving them whiney, nasal, snobbish voices, that don't fit the character descriptions at all. The potent Fitz/Fool chemistry is absent from this book unfortunately. Sad.

With unforgettable characters, a sweeping backdrop, and passionate storytelling, this is a fantasy debut to rival that of Robert Jordan. Filled with adventure and bloodshed, pageantry and piracy, mystery and menace, Assassin's Apprentice is the story of a royal house and the young man who is destined to chart its course through tempests of change.

Well written, intelligent fantasy
Revisado: 01-09-20
Like many I listened to this audiobook after watching the Netflix series. I always loved fantasy, but have found it difficult to find well written books targeted at thinking adults. The Last Wish is just that. I loved it. Geralt is a surprisingly interesting and atypical main character and hero. The stories, like their main character, sparkle with wit and subtle humor. Well worth my time. The audiobook was brilliant. too. The actor Peter Kenny made listening to it a memorable experience.

Unfulfilling spy story with a boring hero
Revisado: 11-06-19
The first part of the book is entertaining. The last third, not so much. The story makes little sense in a lot of ways. What happens to the sisters? Parts of the initial plot of the story are just left behind, and never picked up again. The main character is supposedly very smart, but when reading the book you get the impression, that he mainly just reacts to stuff around him, and never really does things of his own accord. Why is HE not the one solving the mysteries, rather than leaving it to his russian frienemy, who first tries to torture him, then congratulates him and throws him a birthday party...figuratively speaking.. Jenkins is likable, but not particularly interesting. The story is fast pased and mostly entertaining - but neither believable, nor satisfying.

Underwhelming mystery
Revisado: 03-21-19
No mystery unfolds in this crime story. Body is found, lovestory suggested, island established, murderer reveals themself, the end. It felt like a buildup for something more, which it may be in the coming books. But as a standalone story, this is underwhelming at best. Environment description is good I guess, as it did catch my interest. But reading the story felt like opening a fancy looking box to reveal plastic jewellery.

Wait! It Mightn't Be What You Think--
- De Gillian en 04-05-17
Boring and drawn out drama with no drama
Revisado: 08-22-17
This book is possibly a literary masterpiece. Makes no difference to me. I think it was terribly boring. The fragmented storytelling made the story difficult to follow. And the whole thing felt endless to me. I did not feel captured by the story at all. Maybe because I already saw the tv-series, and knew what to expect. Usually though, when you read a book that has been made into tv or film, the written version adds detail, feels fuller and more complete. Not in this case. The book felt incomplete and with hardly any action or drama at all. It felt static in a way the tv series never did. In short the book left me feeling bored and untouched.
