Historia
A deadly virus spreads across the world, gun shots ring out during the night, racial unrest and riots occur. Kings County Hospital is one of the oldest and largest hospitals in the US. The centerpiece of Crown Heights Brooklyn, the County is where some of the sickest and most broken people are brought for their care after being shot, injured or stricken with the HIV virus.

Wish there was more.....
Revisado: 10-14-20
The County is a collection of short stories about true events that happened while Dr. Stoane worked at 'The County' during his residency and also after he became an MD. The author/Doctor seems to shy away from the label of non-fiction, but whether the stories exhibit false names, or are created from memories over 20 years old, it is a fresh look at what going into healthcare can be like. I enjoyed each short story. Some forced you to imagine the ending, but that didn't take away from the drama. The production was very professional with background sounds alerting the listener to another story. My only complaint was the length - it could have been a lot longer.

West with the Night is the story of a remarkable woman molded and shaped by many things: the African jungle, a certain dog, horses, airplanes, friendships with white men and black. There is no life, no story quite like it.

One of my favorites......
Revisado: 11-22-15
Julie Harris did a fantastic performance of painting this story in words. Beryl did an amazing job of describing every detail so that listening to it was like watching a movie inside my head. An exceptional piece of literature.

Historia
Nobody knew where it came from. Nobody knew why it came. When an eight-foot-tall man made of stone appears in the middle of a busy city center one July afternoon, two-bit (and antisocial) reporter Andy Pointer assumes it's just a publicity stunt. Indeed, so does everyone else...until the Stone Man begins to walk, heading silently through the wall of the nearest building, flattening it, and killing several people inside as a result.

Luke Smitherd made it beleiveable!
Revisado: 11-22-15
I normally don't listen to Sci-fi and I especially never listen to horror stories, but Smitherd told the story like it was really happening. I hated putting this book down because I wanted so badly to know what would happen next. Luke, you did an exceptional job of ending this story. Throughout the book, I kept wondering how in the hell you could possibly end a story where the protagonist is unstoppable. You did it well.

Historia
Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn’t seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.

Revisado: 01-24-13
A totally unexpected delight. This story is so well crafted that it constantly leaves you hanging. Rachel Joyce truly understands the art of giving the reader just information that they want to read on and discover the truth within pilgrimage. This story will be on my list of all-time favorites.

Keith Stewart, a retiring and ingenious engineer, could not have been happier in his little house in the shabby London suburb of Ealing. There he invented the mini-motor, the six-volt generator, and the tiny Congreve clock. Then a chain of events sweeps him into deep waters and leads him to his happiest discovery yet.

Revisado: 12-29-12
This book is one of those sleepers that starts out slow and then grabs you by the ears. A bit technical at times, but the ongoing drama makes it a must read. I am now a Nevil Shute fan.

Historia
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

I listen to a lot of books and this one still stands out as one of the best I've encountered. The story is fresh and unpredictable. It grabs your attention and doesn't let go. The narration is second to none - he has you visualizing the story inside your head. I believe that this is King's best work ever.

Lords of the Bow - Part 2 of a trilogy
Revisado: 10-23-09
If you begin reading the first book of the series 'Birth of an Empire', you won't be able pass up 'Lords of the Bow' or 'Bones of the Hills'. Rich with history, this is one of the best stories that I have ever listened to. Conn Iggulden has done a superb job of taking some pieces of history and stitching them together into a great story.
