Historia
Sasha has had it. She cannot bring herself to respond to another inane, “urgent” email or participate in the corporate employee joyfulness program. She hasn’t seen her friends in months. Sex? Seems like a lot of effort. Even cooking dinner takes far too much planning. Sasha has hit a wall. Armed with good intentions to drink kale smoothies, try yoga, and find peace, she heads to the seaside resort she loved as a child. But it’s the off season, the hotel is in a dilapidated shambles, and she has to share the beach with the only other occupant: a grumpy guy named Finn.

Historia
Just days after the 9-11 attacks, a senior Pentagon analyst eased her red Toyota Echo into traffic and headed to work. She never saw the undercover cars tracking her every turn. As she settled into her cubicle on the 6th floor of the Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington, FBI Agents and twitchy DIA officers were hiding in nearby offices. For this was the day that Ana Montes--the US Intelligence Community superstar who had just won a prestigious fellowship at the CIA--was to be arrested and publicly exposed as a secret agent for Cuba.

Excellent
Revisado: 07-07-23
Code Name Blue Wren is a very well written account of American history. This isn't a book for someone looking for a light beach read. Unfortunately (or fortunately, considering you couldn't believe a word the woman said) the author was unable to interview Montes due to her sentence but the interviews with her family and friends paints the picture. It is unfortunate that the governmental powers didn't listen to their own intelligence officers who were sounding the alarms early on in her career.

Lily Weiss is her mother’s worst nightmare: thirty-two and single - the horror! She’s also a talented writer but hides behind a boring job at a science foundation. To her friends, she’s reliable and selfless, which is how she winds up a bridesmaid in five weddings in six weeks. Anything for her three best friends and two (younger) siblings, right? Even if her own love life is...well, she’d rather not talk about it. To keep her sanity, Lily needs a safe place to vent. And so her anonymous blog, Bridesmania, is born.

Perfect Summer Listen
Revisado: 06-29-23
I LOVED Sara Goodman Confino's first book and needed a good summer listen, For the Love of Friends did not disappoint. I will be pre-ordering her next one as soon as I finish this review. Just when you think you have the book figured out and are cheering for Lily here comes the next curve and then the next. It is a light book but still makes you think about how actions have consequences. Definitely one I will listen to again and that is something I very rarely do, unless it is a Jane Austin. Enjoy!

Would that we all had an Evelyn in our lives!
Revisado: 12-14-22
This is a wonderful book, sweet and the story keeps you hooked. Evelyn is the woman we all wish we were. The flashbacks to her teenage years giving us more and more insight into the woman she became. Everyone can take something from her grandmotherly advice.
The reason that I gave the performance only four stars was the narrator's choice in a North Shore accent. I come from the North Shore of Massachusetts and while we may flatten our "Rs" we still enunciate words. It was reminiscent of the SNL skit of the South Boston Red Sox fans and it made me cringe every time.
I would still recommend this book and have several times this week.

When Helene Hanff makes an innocent inquiry about the possibility of purchasing hard-to-find books through Marks and Co., Booksellers, she begins a 20-year love affair with Frank Doel, the proper English bookseller who answers her letter and sends along her first order in the fall of 1949. They are two very unlikely correspondents.

Laugh-out-loud funny and deeply touching, Beth Hoffman's sparkling debut is, as Kristin Hannah says, "packed full of Southern charm, strong women, wacky humor, and good old-fashioned heart." It is a novel that explores the indomitable strengths of female friendship and gives us the story of a young girl who loses one mother and finds many others.

The book we all need right now
Revisado: 10-16-21
I LOVED this book, it is definitely one I will listen to again and again.
The story itself is just charming and the intelligence of the woman that touch her life is amazing. Strong female characters, each teaching CeeCee about the world in their own beautiful way. Would that we all had an Aunt Tootie and Oletta in our lives. I was so sad when the book ended as I am pretty sure these woman had way more to teach us all.
So worth a listen.

A powerful, moving memoir - and a practical guide to healing - written by Dr. Edith Eva Eger, an eminent psychologist whose own experiences as a Holocaust survivor help her treat patients and allow them to escape the prisons of their own minds. The Choice weaves Eger's personal story with case studies from her work as a psychologist. Her patients and their stories illustrate different phases of healing and show how people can choose to escape the prisons they construct in their minds and find freedom, regardless of circumstance.

I feel like this should be mandatory reading for all adults. Dr. Eger is inspirational and truthful. I found myself listening to passages over again just to hear her words of wisdom. I have recommended this book to everyone, especially at a time in this nation's history where so many find themselves adrift and anxious. Her words are grounding and significant. I know this is a book I will pick up again and again through the years.

I had this book in my wishlist for awhile and kept going back to it. I had a lot of driving to do and thought this was the perfect time to listen. It ebbs and flows and some people that I spoke to stopped listening in the less exciting chapters but what a mistake on their part. It is worth listening until the end, the history was wonderful and I realized how little I knew or understood about Russia's history. An enjoyable read.
