Historia
Fraa Erasmus is a young avout living in the Concent of Saunt Edhar, a sanctuary for mathematicians, scientists, and philosophers, protected from the corrupting influences of the "Saecular" world by ancient stone, honored traditions, and complex rituals. Over the centuries, cities, and governments have risen and fallen beyond the concent's walls. Three times during history's darkest epochs, bloody violence born of superstition and ignorance has invaded and devastated the cloistered mathic community.

Perhaps not my favorite of his novels, but Neal Stephenson’s world building is so top tier every entry of his is worthwhile. Maybe it was such a slow burn that it felt like the climax ended the tension too soon, I couldn’t put my finger on it. But then again, it is a long book. And a very good one.

Historia
Ta-Nehisi Coates originally set out to write a book about writing, in the tradition of Orwell’s classic “Politics and the English Language,” but found himself grappling with deeper questions about how our stories—our reporting and imaginative narratives and mythmaking—expose and distort our realities. In the first of the book’s three intertwining essays, Coates, on his first trip to Africa, finds himself in two places at once: in Dakar, a modern city in Senegal, and in a mythic kingdom in his mind.

Not much I can write here that hasn’t been already more eloquently put. It’s as stirring, evocative and trembling-rage-inducing as you may have heard. Probably more. I’m fairly up on my history and there were still large swathes information within that I did not know. Worth every moment of your time.

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

Captivating.

I expected the McConville narrative to be woven a bit more throughout rather than to bookend the overall structure, but it somehow works. Exhaustively researched, compelling and objective. A tremendous and balanced read.

Historia
Technofeudalism says Yanis Varoufakis, is the new power that is reshaping our lives and the world, and is the greatest current threat to the liberal individual, to our efforts to avert climate catastrophe—and to democracy itself. It also lies behind the new geopolitical tensions, especially the New Cold War between the United States and China. Drawing on stories from Greek myth and pop culture, from Homer to Mad Men, Varoufakis explains this revolutionary transformation: how it enslaves our minds, how it rewrites the rules of global power, and, ultimately, what it will take overthrow it.

Revisado: 01-16-25
This is far and away the finest, most concise explainer of the state of the class war that’s currently being waged against the working class and the poor, including an objective fleshing out of the framework of it going back to early feudalism and the Middle Ages. The framing of the letter to the authors father delivers it in a way that otherwise could’ve been intensely dull and his occasional chuckle at his own joke or the absurdity of the unfairness inherent in the system is a delight. Five stars.

It’s always interesting when an author takes a departure from their usual milieu, and Stephenson proves, to hopefully no one’s surprise, who can likely do almost any genre well. This one feels like a spin off of The Americans, a high compliment indeed.
