Historia
In his sleepy Yorkshire town, ex-detective Jackson Brodie is staving off boredom and malaise. His only case is the seemingly tedious matter of a stolen painting. silly, lots of smiles
Revisado: 12-17-24
this book made me laugh and grin with its satirized depictions of "stock" characters. The mystery is a thread which disappears in the very lengthy and detailed descriptions of each person.I liked the book ok because it made me laugh but it could become tiresome.
The narrator is amazing, perfect.

Historia
As a half-goddess possessing magic, Yaga is used to living on her own, her prior entanglements with mortals having led to heartbreak. She mostly keeps to her hut in the woods, where those in need of healing seek her out, even as they spread rumors about her supposed cruelty and wicked spells. But when her old friend Anastasia—now the wife of the Tsar, and suffering from a mysterious illness—arrives in her forest desperate for her protection, Yaga realizes the fate of all of Russia is tied to Anastasia’s. Yaga must step out of the shadows to protect the land she loves.

not what I expected
Revisado: 12-16-22
I was disappointed in this book, but then the genre is probably not for me. The author reading her own book felt unprofessional. Her voice is perfect for Yaga, but when reading other voices, especially men's, her voice doesn't work

Can you imagine writing to Father Christmas and actually getting a reply? Every year, the children of J.R.R. Tolkien would write to Father Christmas, and the letters they received told wonderful stories of his adventures at the North Pole. These humorous tales are brought to life by Derek Jacobi as Father Christmas, John Moffatt as Polar Bear, and Christian Rodska as Ilbereth the Elf, complete with specially composed music.

At first, the plan seems foolproof. Every contingency is covered, and the payoff will make them all rich for life. No one would even get hurt. But not everyone is who they seem. Even as the gang's stolen helicopter is lifting off from the cash depot with $6.5 million inside, questions remain unanswered. What secrets does each man hold?

This is ex-slave Frederick Douglass' second autobiography. It was written after 10 years of reflection following his legal emancipation in 1846, and his break with his mentor, William Lloyd Garrison, catapulted Douglass into the international spotlight as the foremost spokesman for American blacks, both freed and slave.

EXCELLENT

I found the narrator compelling and think that had Douglas himself read his book to us it would have been in the same measured tone. The appalling story needs no emotional addition to be effective.

Historia
April 25, 1986 in Chernobyl was a turning point in world history. The disaster not only changed the world’s perception of nuclear power and the science that spawned it, but also our understanding of the planet’s delicate ecology. With the images of the abandoned homes and playgrounds beyond the barbed wire of the 30-kilometer Exclusion Zone, the rusting graveyards of contaminated trucks and helicopters, the farmland lashed with black rain, the event fixed for all time the notion of radiation as an invisible killer.

The author did a great job in making all the characters authentic. Movie material.
I was moved and awed by the people and how heroic so many were in attempting to avert an even larger disaster. Important work.

I had not known about this historical novel about the London Gordon riots of 1780. Fascinating history with typically good and evil characters. I loved it. it took a while for me to get used to the narrator's "acting" voice, but still it worked for me.

important portraits of famous and unsung heroes and heroines of the civil rights movement. We can learn so much and think harder and better about how hard it was to get voting rights and civil rights and how much more remains to be done. An excellent book
