Terrible narrator
Revisado: 10-02-24
I returned it after the first hour or so. I haven't finished the book so I don't know if it's good, but I imagine it is. The narrator is insufferable. He creates these outlandish voices for characters. And he has a sing song monotone. Absolutely Annoying.

Historia
In the not-too-distant future, a 21-member crew launches from Earth. Their mission: to establish a temporary colony on Mars. Little do they know that colony will become permanent–and the last stand of the human race. Because, without warning, every single person left on Earth simply...vanishes. Now, a thousand years later, the resources needed to sustain life are running out, and the very existence of the Mars colony is threatened. Humankind has only one option–to return to its home planet.

Intriguing plot
Revisado: 09-05-24
I liked the way it interwove real historical mysteries with the sci-fi concept. I'm pretty sure it's a double ending, contrasting the temporal branch created (via time travel) by courageous choice to that created by cautious, protective choice.

Historia
The war raged across the galaxy. Billions had died, billions more were doomed. Moons, planets, the very stars themselves, faced destruction, cold-blooded, brutal, and worse, random. The Idirans fought for their Faith; the Culture for its moral right to exist. Principles were at stake. There could be no surrender. Within the cosmic conflict, an individual crusade. Deep within a fabled labyrinth on a barren world, a Planet of the Dead proscribed to mortals, lay a fugitive Mind. Both the Culture and the Idirans sought it....

Lots of detailed action
Revisado: 04-17-24
If that's your thing, you will like it. I loved the few pages of appendix at the end that actually developed the political theory of the Culture and the Iderans, and explained the history of the war. I would come back for a whole book of that. But not for more blow-by-blow gunfights.

Historia
New York Times bestselling author Peter Swanson pens a spectacularly spine-chilling novella in which an American art student in London is invited to join a classmate for the holidays at Starvewood Hall, her family’s Cotswold manor house. But behind the holly and pine boughs, secrets are about to unravel, revealing this seemingly charming English village’s grim history.

Cynical and unnecessary
Revisado: 12-26-23
I read about this in the Wall Street Journal and gave it a try because of that, but even though it has a plausible plot, there is nothing wholesome or substantial about this story. I doubt that there are many people as purely evil as the story makes them out to be. Even though it wants you to believe thatthey are complex and not purely evil.

Historia
In 2021 cryptocurrency went mainstream. Giant investment funds were buying it, celebrities like Tom Brady endorsed it, and TV ads hailed it as the future of money. Hardly anyone knew how it worked—but why bother with the particulars when everyone was making a fortune from Dogecoin, Shiba Inu, or some other bizarrely named “digital asset”? As he observed this frenzy, investigative reporter Zeke Faux had a nagging question: Was it all just a confidence game of epic proportions? What started as curiosity—with a dash of FOMO—would morph into a two-year globe-spanning quest.

Historia
Art imitates life in this story, as the young actress playing Nina in Chekhov’s The Seagull seizes her romantic destiny by using her staged kiss each evening to seduce her very famous – and very married - leading man. Exploring ambition, responsibility, and the gulf that can exist between the person we project and our true self, this is a study of possibility and of personal agency in the moral choices we make.

Historia
Joe Tasker lies, struck down by illness, in a damp, bug-infested room in the Himalaya, wondering if he will be well enough to climb Dunagiri, his first venture to the "big" mountains. One of Britain’s foremost mountaineers and a pioneer of lightweight climbing, he is about to attempt one of the first true "Alpine-style" climbs in the Greater Ranges. The Dunagiri attempt forms part of Tasker’s striking tale of adventure in the savage arena of the mountains.

Excellent, entertaining throughout
Revisado: 05-08-23
I liked this better than Boardman's The Shining Mountain. It covers some of the same material, but less exhaustively. Tasker has a knack for the telling detail and anecdote. The early climbs are outrageously bumbling. By the end he's a consummate expert, though still pushing it to outrageous limits. No surprise he and Boardman just kept pushing on the east ridge of Everest until they just keeled over and died.

Historia
"It’s a preposterous plan. Still, if you do get up it, it’ll be the hardest thing that’s been done in the Himalayas." Thus spoke Chris Bonington when Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker presented him with their plan to tackle the unscaled West Wall of Changabang - the Shining Mountain - in 1976. Bonington’s was one of the more positive responses; most felt the climb impossibly hard, especially for a two-man, lightweight expedition.

Too bad this era of mountaineers didn't know how to be friends with each other. They could have had a more pleasant time of it. The French team that did the north face in 2017, documented in the film Changabang and the Mirrors of a Repetition, have a much better rapport with each other than Boardman and Tasker.

Short and sweet
Revisado: 04-03-23
Good stuff but doesn't hold up as one of the best mountain climbing books, I don't think. Too much focused on the author's difficulties governing his own irascibility. Roberts got better as he focused outward. In Search of the Old Ones might be his best.
