Unfortunately for the author. I read this during the time of The New York Times and mainstream media admitted that they had created the Russia hoax.

If you miss the fact that women were/are underappreciated the first time it's mentioned, fear not! That theme will be spelled out on 46 of the book's pages. Still it's a good story.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

that saved the world from anarchy. Germany's & Japan's ultimate goal was to divide the world at the Continental Divide of the Rockies, with Japan controlling points west to Manchuria; Germany to the east. Germany to get the small part of Africa it desired ("White Africa").
Many, placing all they had love, family, wealth, stood in their way; Churchill gave them courage. He claimed he was not the Lion--the People were--but he allowed that perhaps he was the Lion's Roar.

To go into detail would be a spoiler for the twists & turns in this book, but make no mistake: this is no ordinary pot-boiler (not that there's anything wrong with pot-boilers). It involves more than one mystery, yes, but this is a classic work of literature, read by a first class talent.

Like crunchy Cheetos, you can't do just one
Revisado: 09-10-19
Another thriller . . and another . . and yet another. As I said in a review of Book 2 of the series, this is not for serious Alan Furst/LeCarre readers of WWII espionage, being a cross between James Bond & the Perils of Pauline. It should be titled "The Gestapo, Roadrunner, and Wile E. Coyote meet again and again and again." The books are fun: just suspend your belief at the first page.

A letdown from the 1st book
Revisado: 08-26-19
I gave Book 1 5*'s, based on the intriguing idea of the onion-skin nature of Nazi polity, akin to a LeCarre Or Furst novel. Book 2 was somewhat disappointing in that it came across as more of a cross between later James Bond flicks & The Perils of Pauline. I'm not sure I'll continue the series, but I'll read the reviews and make a decision. Our hero can't have many lives left, as he seemingly has exhausted eight of them.

It's OK, but preachy
Revisado: 08-04-19
I've read all the Maggie Hope novels up to this point, and none has quite lived up to the original.
Long anachronistic speeches spoil this thin story of what value it might have had. I found that running at about x1.35 speed helped get through it faster.
The fast speed also help the reader's penchant for sing-song, punctuation-bedamned passages. She does somewhat better when reading conversation, but then falls back into, well, don't quite know, sing-song. It's not Midwestern American "girl-speak," or monotone, but if you diagrammed it on a keyboard, you'd see what I mean.
