The story was amazing. The first mind f_(|< was perfect. But it honestly did not need the additional twists at the end. Ending at the most logical ending point (when the book sells) would have made this book perfect. The remaining several twists at the end were unnecessary and seemed to be thrown in just so the author could prove that she can pull off a book within a book within a book within a story.
And the very last paragraph is obviously where her agent said, "Well, what about so-in-so..." Just thrown in.

A little rushed at the end and you knew what was going to happen but the story to get there was wonderful.

M. Never isn't your traditional romance novelist.
She isn't satisfied with boy meets girl. Boy falls in love with girl. They love happily ever after.

No. M. Never gets all of the in betweens and even throws twists and turns. I love the non conformity of her novels and the way she throws tradition out the window!

The male narrator was horrible. The story wasn't bad but the other three in the series were so much better.

Not a huge fan of the female lead being so clingy but whatever. Can't tell you how many times I yelled at her to stop making us women look weak, to take a damn hint and walk away with her pride!
Unfortunately I was at work and got a few weird looks.

But the story was good. 😊

Not for the faint of heart. Seriously. If you can't handle mental, physical and sexual abuse of children and the after effects as they become adults... I would suggest moving on. I applaud the author for being brave enough to write on this subject.
For the rest of us, this story is insane! E. K. Blair has you by the heart from the first chapter. This story didn't just touch on a disturbing topic only whispered about in hushed tones, it throws both hands in and drags it out into the light.
Her writing is in depth, detailed and has you standing right there watching the whole story play out. She'll have you laughing, crying.. Your heart will break and your morbid curiosity will have you hanging on by your nails.

On a serious note, at times you will ask yourself, "WT ACTUAL F AM I READING?" because of the way it takes you through the life of a sexual abused foster child and the mental instability this causes her in her adult life. But then you'll keep reading or keep listening. Because you're addicted to the story.

My empathetic tendencies has me locked in and yours will too. I am running to E. K. Blairs website to find her other books just as soon as I'm done with this series.

Excellent series! Wonderful and suspenseful twists and turns! I can usually figure out a plot twist within a couple chapters (I was able to figure out one plot twist but not until it was right in your face) but Aly had me stumped through most of this story. I was captivated and on the edge of my seat the whole time.

This entire series (Darkest Sunrise, Book 1 & Brightest Sunset, Book 2) had suspense, heartbreak, humor, support, jealousy, love and respect woven throughout all characters.

Note on Narration: Kasha Kensington was wonderful and brought life to the female lead and the children's voices. Her take on the male lead wasn't half bad either.
Nelson Hobbs did fantastic! Exactly how I feel the male lead should have sounded. He brought emotion and heartbreak and humor in a way I haven't heard other male narrators do before. Fantastic job!

I love Aly's writing.
But book one of this series was a necessary train wreck.

This book, however, was fantastic. I fell in love with Caleb in book one. Now his heartache gives him depth. His story will crush you then lift you up.
I love how much more realistic these characters are. Instead of being weak willed and straight laced like Jesse (book one), Emma has sex appeal, a backbone and the rationality to go to friends and ask questions when she doesn't understand where Caleb is coming from or what she did wrong to set him off. I love that about her. She doesn't just assume and write Caleb off, she goes above and beyond to help him through his grief. She is loving and understanding, but she doesn't take any of his crap either. I love Emma. And I love her and Caleb.

Definitely worth suffering through book one.

Narration note:
Lucy Rivers does a bad southern accent and makes the character sound old. Find Andi Arndt...
Christian Fox can read the best dead pan voice! He puts the perfect amount of emotion and humor into every sentence (almost like he actually reads the chapter and understands the characters before hand! Must be a newer concept... 😒) He's currently my #3 fave male narrator!
