Hated it
Revisado: 04-17-24
Simply not worth reading. Hated most of the characters. Very inconsistent characterization. Cringe love story. Was expecting so much more from a book that copies the 1001 Arabian Nights setup. I appreciated the narrator though. Sometimes the slow grandiose style was a bit much, but I still just blame the author

This book explains more lore and Rin gets so much character development in this book, so I enjoyed almost as much as the first one. I appreciate Kuang’s portrayal of war. Every side is ugly. The negative reviews put me off for a while but after finishing the book, I now think they’re written by idealists or people uncomfortable with the genre. The series is 100% worth the read. I definitely put it down a lot and came back to it though, you gotta read when you’re in the mood. Took me about a year! But totally worth it.

Historia
Daisy is a girl coming of age in LA in the late '60s, sneaking into clubs on the Sunset Strip, sleeping with rock stars, and dreaming of singing at the Whisky a Go Go. The sex and drugs are thrilling, but it’s the rock and roll she loves most. By the time she’s 20, her voice is getting noticed, and she has the kind of heedless beauty that makes people do crazy things. Also getting noticed is The Six, a band led by the brooding Billy Dunne.

Historia
Dev Deshpande has always believed in fairy tales. So it’s no wonder then that he’s spent his career crafting them on the long-running reality dating show Ever After. As the most successful producer in the franchise’s history, Dev always scripts the perfect love story for his contestants, even as his own love life crashes and burns. But then the show casts disgraced tech wunderkind Charlie Winshaw as its star.

Story is Worth Reading, with your EYES
Revisado: 12-13-22
2.5 rounded to 3 stars. The narrator who voiced Dev spoke like a dramatic tv show host. Probably intentional, given the setting, but it’s SO cringey, unnatural, and unenjoyable. Charlie’s voice isn’t much better. What’s irritating is the LEVEL of fake, unnatural intonation varies throughout the book. The sample clip available on here DOES NOT do the overall performance justice. I actually remember feeling relieved that the performance was sounding better, then realized I was listening to the part from the sample. It got worse again. You do get used to it after several hours.
As for the story, the beginning/middle is just okay, but the last hour of the book did save it for me. During the first half, I often wondered if the feelings in the book would feel more genuine, and the lines less corny, if I was reading them on paper. A lot of the scenes felt unrealistic, like Dev and Charlie’s interactions before they fell in love. But I thought the last hour of the story was done very well, and made the story worth knowing. I highly recommend giving this story a try with a physical book or e-book.

Historia
The formerly glorious god Apollo, cast down to earth in punishment by Zeus, is now an awkward mortal teenager named Lester Papadopoulos. In order to regain his place on Mount Olympus, Lester must restore five Oracles that have gone dark. But he has to achieve this impossible task without having any godly powers and while being duty-bound to a confounding young daughter of Demeter named Meg. Thanks a lot, Dad. With the help of some demigod friends, Lester managed to survive his first two trials, one at Camp Half-Blood, and one in Indianapolis, where Meg received the Dark Prophecy.

DNF…a Riordan book..HUH?
Revisado: 07-28-22
It started with the Dark Prophecy honestly, but I did at least finish that one. I just can’t get into this story, and I’m a huge fan of PJO and HoO. Book is kinda boring and I find myself realizing i have no idea what the setting is and I don’t remember how they got there. Doesn’t feel as high stakes as the other books. I liked Apollo, so every character’s disdain for him did get tiresome. I never got around to actually liking Meg, probably since she’s written like a kid with secrets and I find that tiresome as well. Perhaps the audiobook format for this book just isn’t for me, and I would do better with a print version. Wish I didn’t use a credit buying this book

Historia
When Rin aced the Keju - the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies - it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal enterprise; and to Rin herself, who realized she was finally free of the servitude and despair that had made up her daily existence. That she got into Sinegard - the most elite military school in Nikan - was even more surprising.

Got me out of a reading slump
Revisado: 07-28-22
This book is different from what I normally read, which is why I’m extra impressed I gobbled it up so quickly. The writing and performance keeps you listening. Absolutely loved it. The magic system was awesome and made sense to me, though I could see some people getting frustrated with it if their perspective is too western. Towards the end there were a few times the character interactions seemed off, as if the characters were getting more from the conversation than the words being said to push the character development/plot forward. At first, I thought the writing was getting lazy and I’d have to give it 4 stars. But by the time I finished it, it made sense to me. The book is in 3rd person, not 1st, so it didn’t occur to me that I was dealing with an unreliable narrator till the end. You are still reading the MC’s perception of everything, which is sometimes flawed. She sees the worst in some people and idolizes others. She’s an immature character from the beginning, but as she leans more and more into her rash, vengeful nature she becomes more and more unhinged, guilty, and defensive. Once I pieced that together, I had no other concerns with the writing. The story is wonderfully complex but easy to read. The history, mythology, and current political situation are set up with just the right balance for a first book. Can’t wait to read the second!!

Unpredictable, and so Well Done
Revisado: 02-23-22
This book is so masterfully done. In this book we are privy to the stress Zahru’s is under, as she goes back and forth between distrusting Kasta and distrusting herself. Each time, Mae had me wholly convinced of the truth. But whether you go through the book thinking that Zahru is paranoid or that she is naive, I promise you will be caught by surprise in the end.
