A fun romp through a well built universe
Revisado: 10-04-22
What if the aliens were mostly friendly? That's the basic premise behind this book. It's a laugh a minute adventure with a little bit of romance sprinkled in. Really looking forward to the rest of the series. I love how it treats aliens as just people with differently shaped bodies instead of horrible monsters.

Yuval Noah Harari's 21 Lessons for the 21st Century is a probing and visionary investigation into today's most urgent issues as we move into the uncharted territory of the future. As technology advances faster than our understanding of it, hacking becomes a tactic of war, and the world feels more polarized than ever, Harari addresses the challenge of navigating life in the face of constant and disorienting change and raises the important questions we need to ask ourselves in order to survive.

Pivotal writing for the near future
Revisado: 11-14-18
I've recommended this book to just about everyone I know. It's an incredibly powerful glimpse at what is to come and how we can make life better. YNH takes current events out to their logical conclusions in a way that neither over sells the future nor paints an overly dramatic picture of disaster.
Instead the author presents some simple critiques of the forces currently shaping our world and pulls back the curtain on where we're headed if things don't change.

Historia
In Skyfaring, airline pilot and flight romantic Mark Vanhoenacker shares his irrepressible love of flying on a journey from day to night, from new ways of mapmaking and the poetry of physics to the names of winds and the nature of clouds. Here, anew, is the simple wonder and transcendent joy of motion and the remarkable new perspectives that height and distance bestow on everything we love.

So bad. So very very bad.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
If you want to listen to 12 hours of a pompous windbag illustrating his own eloquence you may like this. Seriously, the guy uses 5 dollar words where a penny would do. "Simplest bifurcation of the sky", "altimetry of light", and "Ichthyology of our sky sea" are just some of the nonsensical attempts at poetry you can look forward to.
What was most disappointing about Mark Vanhoenacker’s story?
The question I'm answering here, in case you can't see it; Is "What was most disappointing about Mark Vanhoenacker's story?" All I can say is...
"What story? It just rambles forever with very little coherence."
Seriously. This guy has to have tons of anecdotes about ridiculous passenger demands, hair raising close calls, or even just the experience of being a commercial pilot. But unfortunately all he seems to want to do is impress us with where he's been and what words he knows. He Vanhoenacker starts a story, gets midway through telling it, and suddenly loses himself to a quote from some obscure poet.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Been hired to read a better book. Seriously the narrator was the best part of this, and that only because despite his constant mispronunciation of aviation related terms like "Mach", he sounded a little like George Takei.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment. I really was hoping for something much different than what this ended up being.
Any additional comments?
I don't normally write these reviews, because the books I get from Audible are normally great! This one just suuuuuuucked. It was a huge miss on the part of the author and it reads like the content of a Reddit post in the 'i am very smart' category. What could have been a wonderful exploration of what it's like to fly for a living, got lost in this self aggrandizing blowhard's attempt at poetry.

Fear of Physics is a lively, irreverent, and informative look at everything from the physics of boiling water to cutting-edge research at the observable limits of the universe. Rich with anecdotes and accessible examples, it nimbly ranges over the tools and thought behind the world of modern physics, taking the mystery out of what is essentially a very human intellectual endeavor.

For some reason this just didn't grab me the way Brian Greene or Stephen Hawking's stuff did. I feel like Lawrence Krause just comes off as slightly condescending.
