Historia
From the rise of Sargon of Akkad, who in the third millennium BCE ruled what is now Iraq and Syria, to the collapse of the great European empires in the twentieth century, the empire has been the dominant form of power in history. Dominic Lieven’s expansive book explores strengths and failings of the human beings who held those empires together (or let them crumble). He projects the power, terror, magnificence, and confidence of imperial monarchy, tracking what they had in common as well as what made some rise to glory and others fail spectacularly.

a bit slow at times
Revisado: 01-26-23
for what it's worth, the author is attempting to summarize a LOT of very intricate aspects of history into a single book, and I think that was done well. They balanced important details with broad overviews and simplifications to create a very good summary of historical empires. However, the way it was written was very bland at many points. This book took me some time to chew through because of how easily chapters started to blend together. I would recommend this book to a history buff, but a casual reader who wants to know the key aspects regarding the rise and fall of empires throughout history should probably look elsewhere.

Historia
How did the founding generation intend for us to interpret and apply the Constitution? Are liberals right when they cite its “elastic” clauses to justify big government, or are conservatives right when they cite its explicit limits on federal power? Professor Brion McClanahan, popular author of The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Founding Fathers, finds the answers by going directly to the source—the Founders themselves, who debated all the relevant issues in their state constitutional conventions.

a bit biased for my taste
Revisado: 07-01-22
More bias than I was hoping for in this type of book, but it still offered a very unique perspective that we often don't get of how the constitution came to be. I think many people assume some guys in white wigs just whipped up some rules in a room one day and all signed it. This book helps illustrate how heavily each word was scrutinized and curated to ensure the constitution wasn't overly abused or misconstrued (unfortunately that is the case from all sides today).

One hundred thousand years ago, the galaxy was populated by a great variety of beings. But one species - eons beyond all others in both technology and knowledge - achieved dominance. They ruled in peace but met opposition with quick and brutal effectiveness. They were the Forerunners - the keepers of the Mantle of Responsibility, the next stage of life in the Universe’s Living Time. And then they vanished. This is their story.

I have no idea why it took me so long
Revisado: 04-13-22
as a self-proclaimed Halo Lore addict, I have no idea why it took me so long to finally start reading/listening to the Halo Novels. I see them referenced just about everytime I dig into some rabbit hole of lore, yet its taken me nearly a decade to actually come around to reading them. The story was incredibly well written, the narration was precisely the style and flow that a book as lore-heavy as these trilogies deserved. I can't recommend these books enough! I still have many more to go but I've enjoyed every one so far! (for reference, this review was made after I completed the trilogy)

Historia
World War II endures in the popular imagination as a heroic struggle between good and evil, with villainous Hitler driving its events. But Hitler was not in power when the conflict erupted in Asia. His armies did not fight in multiple theaters, his empire did not span the Eurasian continent, and he did not inherit any of the spoils of war. That central role belonged to Joseph Stalin. Drawing on ambitious new research in Soviet, European, and US archives, Stalin’s War revolutionizes our understanding of this global conflict by moving its epicenter to the east.

New Perspective
Revisado: 04-05-22
I'm no historian, so I'm sure there were some biases or inaccuracies that I didn't catch, but overall I enjoyed hearing a perspective on WW2 that we seldom hear about from what I believe to be a very objective point of view. Russia, and more specifically Stalin, played a huge role in the war that is often seen from the US perspective as US vs Hitler (and Japan, which seems to be another thing Americans forget about aside from Pearl Harbor). It's often neglected how Stalin/Russia played both sides - frankly I think it helps bring clarity to how the US is involved in foreign affairs, as well as clarity on how modern day Russia got to be the considerable super power it is today.

Historia
Unlike the wars in Vietnam and Iraq, the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 had near-unanimous public support. At first, the goals were straightforward and clear: Defeat al-Qaeda and prevent a repeat of 9/11. Yet soon after the United States and its allies removed the Taliban from power, the mission veered off-course and US officials lost sight of their original objectives.

Great Information, Redundant Reading
Revisado: 01-07-22
Perhaps it's just me being picky, but constantly hearing "they said in an army oral history interview" really spoiled a lot of this book for me. The narrator did a fantastic job adding some character to all of the different people and quotes involved, but whoever made the executive decision to have the narrator state the actual source EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. clearly hasn't listened to this audio book themselves. Trim out all the citations/sources, or at least find a better way to acknowledge them that doesn't require stating them after every quote. If I were reading this book, those would be the parts I skim over because they are repetitive - unfortunately you can't do that in an audiobook. That all said, the actual content was well put together and very thorough.

Historia
Work defines who we are. It determines our status and dictates how, where, and with whom we spend most of our time. It mediates our self-worth and molds our values. But are we hardwired to work as hard as we do? Did our Stone Age ancestors also live to work and work to live? And what might a world where work plays a far less important role look like? To answer these questions, James Suzman charts a grand history of "work" from the origins of life on Earth to our ever more automated present, challenging some of our deepest assumptions about who we are.

its not what you think it is, and thats ok
Revisado: 10-13-21
This book has a lot more to do with anthropology and how humans have evolved our purpose throughout time. It also talks about how changing circumstances effect us as a human race, and therefore how that affects our work/life. I enjoyed this book regardless, just be aware it doesn't really dig in to the "why we work" the way one might think.

In Unstoppable, Bill Nye crystallizes and expands the message for which he is best known and beloved. That message is that with a combination of optimism and scientific curiosity, all obstacles become opportunities, and the possibilities of our world become limitless.

worth it!
Revisado: 01-18-21
I grew up watching Bill Nye, and often take for granted that he is likely the reason I am so scientifically inclined. For a while he was talked about by some of my friends as a "radical liberal pawn". I disagreed deep down but at the time I didn't know why. As I got older, and finished my ME degree focusing on energy, I became more and more aware of what purpose drives me, and this book covers ever last bit of it. I highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for an informative, pragmatically optimistic take on what humans can achieve if we just decide it's worth it.
