So boring
Revisado: 03-11-25
It’s sweet - and I like how the author tried to make the main character, but I just can’t get into it. I listened to the first book of the series then was done. It’s like - cosy crime light. There just isn’t enough interest. The main characters introspection is fairly weak and superficial. Which is pretty typical of books like this - but then on top of it there’s not much interesting action. It’s like a whole book of people just being nice to her - which is nice - but feels contrived and forced. None of the other characters reactions toward the main feel natural or realistic. With these books I feel like it’s 80% characters and 20% storyline and the characters here just aren’t doing it for me :(

Couldn’t get through it
Revisado: 09-16-24
I’m a long time reader/listener of cozy crime. It doesn’t have to be high literature for me to enjoy it, actually probably better if it’s not, but I could not get through this one. I gave it 5 hours before I finally gave up. The narrator is just awful. I don’t know if the author intended everyone to sound snobby but they all just sound like people I’d never talk to. Also everyone sounds the same. She pronounces words in a weird way like she’s trying to do something but I don’t think what she’s trying to do. I honestly don’t even know how I might feel about the story because I’m so distracted by the narrator.
Overall, everything feels a little forced and mediocre. I think it’s a good idea poorly executed in both writing and narration. I couldn’t get into it.

Not sure if it's the character or the narrator...
Revisado: 09-01-23
I like this story itself ok, but I don't like any of the characters. The main character is annoying enough that I've considered stopping listening a few times. I just use it for background noise at this point. All the other characters are just kind of mean. I listen to a lot of cozy crime/mystery and one of the things I like is the easy relationships and character development and I'm not feeling good about either of those things after being 20 hours in to this series. That being said - it might be the narrator's interpretation of the characters. It seems like she's doing a little too much or something. I can't pinpoint why I don't like it, but I don't. I do know that the way the characters talk to and about each other isn't realistic. The main characters is annoying and immature, but also acts like she has it all together, there's just not much cohesion. I don't get what kind of person she's supposed to be, but what I do know is that I don't think I'd enjoy hanging out with any of these characters if they were real people.
Also - no bearing on the # of stars I gave, but yeah the tech issues are frustrating. You can't play this from the app at all. You have to open the web browser and play from there.

Historia
A thousand years have passed since a dragon has been seen in the world. Science and technology have replaced magic, which has dwindled until it has become little more than an element of myth and legend. There are those who still have dragon blood flowing through their veins, distant descendants of the mighty creatures of old. These rare humans have the power to cast magic, the power to heal, and the power to craft alchemical weapons capable of starting wars...or ending them.

Cringe score 5/5
Revisado: 10-24-22
I got through the first book, painfully, and couldn’t continue. I gave this book 7 hours of my life and wanted to like it, but I just couldn’t. And I’m usually one to stick it out just to see if it gets better. I mostly couldn’t deal with the narrator anymore. I hate being overly critical or harsh in reviews but… here I go… I’m sorry :(
The story is pretty good I think. I like the ideas and setting, it all seems like it would make a good book but it just doesn’t come together. The cringe factor is just way too high. Main character is apparently a highly skilled and capable sorceress - obsessed with a boy after meeting him once? The love story is just so painfully unrealistic it’s hard to listen to. Is it sci fi/fantasy or teen romance? I can’t tell. I can see a young girl (12-15 age range) liking this, but then the content also isn’t appropriate for that age range and most girls that would be interested in the love story probably wouldn’t be interested in anything else? I also wouldn’t want the main character to be someone I would want my teen daughter to admire. I just don’t know what to think of feel other than - it doesn’t work.
The narrator is not great, she’s ok. She has good inflection and voice alterations for different characters but her accent hurts. She drops her “t”s and sounds a bit like Cher from clueless. Example: Instead of saying “mountain” she says “mou-ann”. Even my 11 year old noticed it. Just more cringe. If she was reading a teen romance, probably be great. Kind of the same as the story.

Historia
It is the distant future, and Baird is a loner, a part time spy, and a notorious alleged thief. “Notorious” for the audacity of her crimes; “alleged” because nobody has ever been able to legally prove she committed any of them. When the hush-hush agency known as the Toolbox recruits Baird, being a clandestine operative seems like a great way to get paid to do what she already does anyway. That is, until a mission goes wrong, and Baird is infected with a deadly virus.

Revisado: 08-01-21
I loved this book! It was really interesting and kept me curious and engaged. I would definitely recommend checking it out. Also I say in the other review about goggles being pronounced gargles, this is explained in the story. These are AR goggles and it’s the brand name. gARgles. They literally even explain how it’s written.

This was of course, just as awesome as the first two. I love how he changes the story, but keeps the background and characters. It's the perfect combo of new and interesting, but still we the same characters we know... And love? Laugh out loud funny, but still insightful and fascinating.

Love this series
Revisado: 09-15-16
I really disliked this narrator when the switch happened after the first story, but the story is so great that I don't even notice anymore if I like or dislike him. He is good at bringing the characters to life, but they are very well written. This novel so far was probably my favorite so far. Unlike many series that get to be the same thing over and over this far in this one just keeps getting better. There are so many story lines to follow that when he goes back to a character you're like "oh my gosh I totally forgot this was happening!!!" and it's exciting all over again. I cannot wait for the next book and I will definitely be checking out his other works!

Loving this series
Revisado: 08-14-16
A lot of series I read start to fall apart towards the later books but not this one. Cooley has built a world and characters that continue to fascinate throughout. I never find my mind wandering when I'm listening. While I believe the narrator does an overall good job giving life to this story his misprounounciation of some words makes me a little crazy. The characters words don't always match the narration. For example, at one point he sort of shouted a word then read "she hissed", and I was like wait what? It didn't necessarily not make sense for her to have said it the way he did but it would have made more sense had he stuck to doing what the narration said. None of this makes me not want to listen to the book but it does create some hiccups if you're like me and get immersed in the world. You periodically get jolted back to reality really quickly. Also, I think the first few books or one of the books had a different narrator? And he reads a few of the characters significantly differently. Overall it is very very good though.

Can't get enough of this series
Revisado: 07-30-16
It's been a while since I've gotten so engrossed in a series like this. I'm really big on characters and character development and I love the way he is tying the characters together and growing them. The way that he gets the reader involved with every character really draws the reader in. Great story, great characters, amazing narration. Everything I could want in an audiobook.
