The ending broke my heart. I have no more words but Amazon is very insistent.

I read this book last summer and enjoyed it. Can’t wait for the next book. With a recent sale, I grabbed the audiobook. It was well worth it. Oftentimes, the narrator will sound to old when voicing teen characters, but this was not the case here. Laura Knight Keating did a great job with Wren, Theo and the broader cast of characters and really brought the book to life.

This book had all the fun and drama that come with a holiday spent cooped up together, plus the chemistry and confusion of former lovers. And the cameo appearance in Chapter 25 was chef’s kiss. Loved the duet-style narration, and you can’t go wrong with Joe Arden and Maxine Mitchell. Joe’s toddler voice was a favorite.

I don’t think I’ll ever be the same. Dom will never not break my heart. Joe Arden’s and Maxine Mitchell’s performances, as expected, made Dom’s tale all the more heartbreaking. I highly recommend the book, but just make sure you’re in the right headspace for it.

I’m not typically a dark romance reader. I’m not into the post-apocalyptic genre. I’ve never read RH before. Blue Nose Audio’s promotion is how I found this story, and the talented cast is why I decided to give it a try. They did an amazing job of bringing Rebecca Quinn‘s words to life and showing the layers of their characters. My only regret is that I have to hang on this cliff for a month and a half until the sequel is released. I will definitely spend the credit for the next book.

The continuation of the overall story was good, the introduction of new characters worked well and the narrators were great. The only part that let me down a bit was the rebuilding of Caroline and Ben’s relationship. Ben went from backing off to oh, it’s a relationship now. I felt like Caroline’s relationships with the kids was more organic and less forced. Looking forward to Alice’s story.

I can’t say enough about the narrators, especially Joe Arden. I’ll be acquiring the next audiobook in the series on the strength of their performances.

The story was enjoyable, but the narration was impressive. Not everyone could handle the multitude of accents and character voices like this narrator did.

Eva wanted to have it all yet had nothing to offer. Her main redeemable quality was her care for her father. Otherwise, she had no idea how to compromise and would’ve turned out exactly like her mother if Tobias hadn’t caved. She didn’t want her life to change, but of course your life changes with a child. She had no stability in her life to offer their child. Hopefully, in the year between the last chapter and the epilogue, Eva grew up. Tobias deserved better.

The characters’ growth and development as individuals and as a couple were believable and pretty well paced, but I had a couple issues.

***spoilers***
The uninformed treatment of type 1 diabetes was my biggest disappointment. First, insulin must be refrigerated. You don’t hide “stashes” of it in the linen closet or pantry just to make sure you have it on hand when your main “stash” is misplaced. You don’t treat a severe low, which Nolan is evidently experiencing in one scene, with insulin. You treat it with fast-acting sugar and then a slower acting carb. And you certainly don’t need to go to urgent care because of it unless you’re unconscious. The only thing realistic about it was how people, especially those who are young, can act recklessly when it comes to their care and struggle with wanting to be “normal.”

I’m curious whether Stevie escaped consequences at work for the spectacle at the work party, regardless of the viral nature of it. I also wonder whether she ever addressed how her employers would only give her patients who were unlikely to be attracted to her. It strikes me as discrimination and a hindrance to her career.

The following were choices characters made that just bothered me:

The way Joey kept cornering Stevie and blocking her exit was problematic. It’s harassment and she never did anything about it.

And RJ’s idea that he gets to punch a teammate for sleeping with his sister is just repugnant to me. Like he’s some medieval man defending his sister’s honor, as if she had no agency and Stevie and Bishop were not equal participants.
