Historia
There are few moments in American history in which the course of events tipped so suddenly and so dramatically as at the Battle of Midway. At dawn of June 4, 1942, a rampaging Japanese navy ruled the Pacific. By sunset, their vaunted carrier force (the Kido Butai) had been sunk and their grip on the Pacific had been loosened forever. In this absolutely riveting account of a key moment in the history of World War II, one of America's leading naval historians, Craig L. Symonds, paints an unforgettable portrait of ingenuity, courage, and sacrifice.

Fantastic Read!
Revisado: 08-17-24
A very well done account. This includes a longer lead up to the battle, and its necessary to understand the full scope of what occurred and why. I thought I had a good handle on Midway, but I was wrong, this had far more detail and analysis of important events than I was aware existed. I highly recommend this title.

On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all.

It Gets Better
Revisado: 04-06-24
I started to begin this review by saying I have a love/hate relationship with the 1st two books, however, that's too strong. I'm going to call it a love/eye roll relationship. I do not know much about the timing of Dan Simmons books or his writing career, but this first Hyperion book reads like its his first effort.
The story is told from a style of multiple small stories with an overarching wrapper around it (this probably has a name, I'm just not familiar with it). The interesting part is that the short stories are far more polished than the wrapper, most of them anyway. One of them goes on far too long, with a character that neither likable nor interesting.
Having said the above, I like the first two books, and would recommend them. Buckle up though, they are long, and wordy, and take the long way around to get to a point. My take on this series is someone attempting to create (copy?) a Dune like operatic universe. It works, but it has numerous eye roll moments. Mostly in the nomenclature of weapons and technology. Especially the weapons (deathwand and hell whip to name a couple). But, this does get better too. Its as though Dan's writing matured rapidly as he went along, realized the sophomoric elements and stopped using them. The one glaring eye roll that doesn't end is the Shrike. Freddy meets Jason meets The Terminator meets a porcupine. So we have a creature, that can manipulate time, is 9 feet tall, very fast and made of metal, but that's just not good enough. We have to add barbs and spikes and scalpels and all sorts of sharp pointy things. It boarders on the ridiculous.
There are also a number of unexplained threads that would seem to have quite an interesting backstory, but, he never touches them. But, instead, we get the ramblings and lengthy backstory to and of a poet.
Eye roll points and ignored threads aside, its quite creative and worth the read, and moving onto the 2nd installment.

When we meet David Miller, a veteran of the Afghan War, his PTSD from his time deployed has nearly crippled him, with his violent flashbacks continually dragging him back to the most traumatic moments of his tour. However, when David crosses paths with a shadowy organization called Fallen Arrow, it’s revealed to him that his flashbacks aren’t memories, but, in fact, a form of time travel.

Good Story - Production Needs Work
Revisado: 11-28-23
I actually really enjoyed the story, very interesting concept. BUT, there is a reason some things on Audible are "included". The production makes the story very hard to follow in places. Whomever is producing these needs to understand base so high it makes your base driver vibrate is probably too high. And all the background noise during dialog makes the listener have to rewind to make certain they follow which character is speaking which line. And please, the "jump" sound?!? Sounds more like an avalanche.
SPOILER ALERT BELOW!
This doesn't actually end. If there is going to be more to the story, great. But, I might wait until you see there are more than 8 episodes before starting.

Not For Me
Revisado: 01-28-23
I'm a Neal Stephenson fan, but this series apparently just isn't for me. I wasn't enthralled with Quicksilver, but I read a number of reviews suggesting to give the rest in the series a try, that it would get better. And, just like Quicksilver, King of the Vagabond is well written and at times quite funny, but there is no real story. I'm guessing this one is just not for me.

Well, There's 14 hours I'll never get back.
Revisado: 01-08-23
I have read a few of Neal Stephenson's works and I should have paid more attention to the reviewers. One of them made the statement there is no story, at all. And he was right. Its like When Jerry Seinfeld and George were pitching their idea to the network, "its a show about nothing". This part of the story is a "book about nothing". A well written book about nothing, but still nothing happens. I did get a caught up in the well done dialog, but frustrated by random and haphazard comings and goings of various characters. And listening for any length of time will make your mind wander because there isn't anything to keep you interested. Its like watching security footage at a busy mall at Christmas - lots of activity, but nothing really interesting. I'm going to give the next installment a shot as most reviewers say this was just something to set the tone and feel for the rest of the story.

Historia
This classic of spycraft is based on Allen Dulles's incomparable experience as a diplomat, international lawyer, and America's premier intelligence officer. Dulles was a high-ranking officer of the CIA's predecessor - the Office of Strategic Services - and was present at the inception of the CIA, where he served eight of his 10 years there as director. Here he sums up what he learned about intelligence from nearly a half-century of experience in foreign affairs.

A Bit Dry
Revisado: 12-02-22
It reads like a history textbook. Its not poorly written, just not what I was looking for. I've read about Allen Dulles and thought this might be about his time in the OSS and forming of the CIA, and maybe the book with get there eventually. But, I could only make it through about 4 chapters. Far too many names I didn't know, and too far back in history. As best I can tell, this was written in 1963 (Allen Dulles died in 1969). Before choosing this one, be aware of what it is.

A Bit of A Downer
Revisado: 11-25-22
I loved this series. If they were not so long I would go back and reread them. I didn't, however, love the ending, but it is what it is. This installment was more of a downer than I expected, though. Still love the story and characters, and if you've gotten this far, you have to finish. But be aware, its 20 hours of gloomy road.

Undead Part 7 is UN-fortunate
Revisado: 09-29-22
I may be done with this series. The actual story-line is interesting. And the writing has not fallen off. My issue is with what the author did with the background story. Scorched earth. Its exactly the reason I stopped watching Walking Dead, eliminating characters without adding anything to the actual story. Why make the characters (and we readers) go through all the previous installments to just wipe out the entire reason those were even written. The last chapter seems like an apology for the rest of the book.

Civil war looms in the Bobiverse in this brand-new, epic-length adventure by Audible number one best seller Dennis E. Taylor. More than a hundred years ago, Bender set out for the stars and was never heard from again. There has been no trace of him despite numerous searches by his clone-mates. Now Bob is determined to organize an expedition to learn Bender’s fate - whatever the cost. But nothing is ever simple in the Bobiverse. Things That Make You Go Hmmm.
Revisado: 05-10-21
Good story, interesting twists. Where the previous 3 jumped around in the timeline, this one tends not to. Also limited number of characters, some cameo's but largely the same handful of names. Another review mentioned the chase scene going on 100 pages too long - dead right. Very worth the read, but it is different.
