Narrator is unlistenable.
Revisado: 05-14-19
I usually love listening to the Avalon books; they make my long commute fly by. But the narrator on this one is completely unlistenable. I tried for an hour or so, but I just can't. I'll have to return this.one.

Historia
Leslie Marmon Silko's sublime Ceremony is almost universally considered one of the finest novels ever written by an American Indian. It is the poetic, dreamlike tale of Tayo, a mixed-blood Laguna Pueblo and veteran of World War II. Tormented by shell shock and haunted by memories of his cousin who died in the war, Tayo struggles on his impoverished reservation. After turning to alcohol to ease his pain, he strives for a better understanding of who he is.

Unlistenable Performance
Revisado: 11-09-17
My story rating is a guess because I can't listen to the narration. I still long to experience this book and I will buy a copy for visual reading after returning this. The narration here is so awful--obnoxiously overly polished and enunciated like the voice of a game show announcer. It's distracting to the point I can't even experience the story. I think I've encountered this guy before and I honestly just can't...I'll keep an eye out and avoid his narration in the future.

Good Book, Weird Narration
Revisado: 10-26-17
I wasn't familiar with this narrator, but may avoid performances by her in the future. Hoffman's story is lovely, I think, but the voices Ms. Moore came up with for Jillian and Sally--the two main characters--are strange indeed. Sally sounds screechy--the narrator has a naturally deep voice and tries to push Sally high beyond her range. But Jillian's voice is distractingly odd. Hoffman's text describes Jillian's voice as deep and rich, but the narrator, whose voice is already deep, does this strange, forced, "even deeper" thing that sometimes makes her sound like a mobster and sometimes makes her sound like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer from the seventies tv show.
Hoffman weaves a really nice story, though. I recommend reading this one over listening to it.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Both the story and the narration are fantastic in this one. I definitely recommend choosing audio for this book! I ended up sitting in my car beyond my long commute time some days because I didn't want to pause.

First narrator bizarre
Revisado: 06-14-17
I loved this book, and recommend it to everyone I encounter. I honestly think if you care about the history of our country at all, this is a must-read.
But the narration for the first section is strange. The female narrator chose kind of a "sing-songy kindergarten-story-time-with-a-smiley-voice" thing for her section, and it really clashes with the gruesome details of murder investigations.
Once her part ends, however, the rest of the book is narrated well and is both gripping and terrifying in all of its implications.

Don't Miss Noah's Performance
Revisado: 05-26-17
I am so glad I chose audio for this book--Noah's performance is brilliant! His ability to shift from voice to voice and from dialect to dialect is genius. And his description of living both under and post Apartheid is rich, detailed, and insightful.
