Inconsistency
Revisado: 10-23-21
DId it bother anyone else that there is a line in this book that says Jack Ryan Jr., is the oldest child of the President of the United States. Did I miss where Sally Ryan never existed?
Don't they have editors that are supposed to keep up with the facts of the narratives that have gone before?

Again, some improbabilities
Revisado: 10-09-21
Thankfully, I did not read this series for the accuracy of the legal system. Maybe it works differently in Alabama and Tennessee than it does in Texas. A capital murder voir dire takes two to four weeks. Jurors have to be questioned about all their normal prejudices plus whether they would be willing to put someone to death as punishment. To pick a capital jury in four hours or even one day is an impossibility.
My reading pleasure is in the development of the characters. Give me a good character any day, good or bad, and I will overlook some plot issues.
The Professor, Bo, Wade, Powell & Rick. Amazing men.
I could have been happier without hearing yet another comparison to Sam Elliott in one of the movies; or hearing again, a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. I suppose if you are not listening to them all at once, it would not be so trite in the repetition.
Overall a great listen.

Some improbabilities

I have never known a single capital murder voir dire to take less than two to four weeks to seat a jury. To pick one in four hours or even one day is impossible. Since the death penalty is on the table, jurors have to be questioned about all the regular stuff plus whether they could consider putting someone to death as a penalty.

Have your hankies ready
Revisado: 10-09-21
I have loved the characters in this series. I think the character development for the main cast was well conceived and executed. Although I have some issues with some of the legal scenarios, getting all the law correct was not the reason I listened to these. The Professor and of course, The Man were both amazing and their influence on those around them, to be admired.
I admit, I cried.
Thank you to Robert Bailey for sharing the character and attributes of your own father with us; and thank you for your talent in the narration, Eric Dove.

Another narrator who needs to do some homework
Revisado: 09-28-21
I love Clancy. I am rereading all the books in order. Lou Diamond Phillips. Interesting choice, but I have been surprised at how good he is at narrating. My favorite Clancy narrator will always be Scott Brick. He does voices that you can pick out and his accents are amazing for different countries. Of course Lou Diamond Phillips is head over heels better than M. Prichard who is terrible doing anything but English words.
But Lou, you let me down on the French trips. Arrondissement is not a five syllable word. Google it; there are only four syllables. The e after the double ss means emphasize the ss and the e is silent. A-ron-dees-mahn is not a-ron-diss-e-mahn. If you cannot read the pronunciation clues, you can youtube this and hear the difference. Having someone who can do the foreign language accents right in English, but pronounce the non English words is so important. It makes or breaks your concentration when you hear someone constantly mispronounce the words.

Narrator butchers Spanish words
Revisado: 09-24-21
So I am listening to all the books in the series in order. I wish that the main character did not make so many of the same mistakes -- getting distracted from the mission, but wasting time and effort on things that result in his being further behind in success.
The narrator is the same so far. And for the most part, he is a pretty decent reader: variety of voices, attempt to do accents etc. But in this book, he destroys some essential and easy to remember Spanish pronunciation rules. The main bad guy is Daniel de la Rocha which is a hard "ch" like churros or chimichanga, macho, machismo or change in English, not "sha". Every time he says the name, it is wrong, and it distracts from the story. Police, or "policía" has an accent to tell you which syllable is emphasized. It is not "poLIS-eeya", but "poli-SEE-a". There are youtubes that give you examples of how to pronounce these words. Not to mention, there should be someone directing the performance to make sure the words are correct. These are two examples of many mistakes; others include (iglesia -- just like Julio, he makes iglosia; ciudaño (seeudanyo) , he turns into kwidano; and every word with a ido at the end like sentido, entendido or chingado etc., he makes "Doh" instead of "tho". Virgen is not vir-gin but vir-hen.
His French pronunciation in the second book, was likewise challenged. St. Germain is nasal and should be just like the word for hand, main (mah), not Ger-mane; and he adds the final consonant to many words that the French leave off the sound at the end.
Authors should always remember the narrator can make or break their books. This is an easy fix.

It is The Campus. Secretly created under the administration of President Jack Ryan, its sole purpose is to eliminate terrorists and those who protect them. Officially, it has no connection to the American government - a necessity in a time when those in power consider themselves above such arcane ideals as loyalty, justice, and right or wrong.

Not my favorite in the Jack Ryan Series
Revisado: 09-02-21
Lou Diamond Phillips was great, except for Mary Pat. He gave her a very thick Boston or Northeastern accent. The problem with this is the woman grew up bilingual and lived overseas for years speaking Russian regularly. As a linguist, the thick Boston/ Northeastern accent would be gone. So, that bugged me. The rest of the interpretations were fine. At least unlike Pritchard, he actually had accents to share.
I think the story line and the characters were a bit undeveloped in this one. I am reading the Jack Ryan series in the chronological order. How disappointing to learn such a huge plot point as killing off a major character, occurred in the Jack Jr. series. SIGH. Now, I have to make sure I get the spin offs and incorporate them in the time line.

Historia
Hugh of Singleton, fourth son of a minor knight, has been educated as a clerk, usually a prelude to taking holy orders. However, feeling no certain calling despite a lively faith, he turns to the profession of surgeon, training in Paris and then hanging out his sign in Oxford. A local lord asks him to track the killer of a young woman whose bones have been found in the castle cesspit. She is identified as the impetuous missing daughter of a local blacksmith, and her young man, whom she had provoked very publicly, is in due course arrested and sentenced at the Oxford assizes.

The narrator was exactly what I would hope for this period piece. Hugh stole my heart in a way Shardlake never could. And lovely gentle Bruce, warms my heart. Glad Crossley’s talents have found a niche.

Terrible Narrator
Revisado: 07-13-21
Okay, so he is not the worst narrator but he cannot do any accents or distinguish voices, which in a Jack Ryan Novel is imperative. He does not even try, so if you are encountering characters from oh, Russia for example, forget it. I am not sure why Prichard got the gig for Clancy books because he absolutely is nothing like listening to Scott Brick. Listen to Hunt for Red October with one accent after another. Very disappointing even for the biggest Ryan novel fan.
