Historia
As a boy, James Rebanks's grandfather taught him to work the land the old way. Their family farm in England's Lake District hills was part of an ancient agricultural landscape: a patchwork of crops and meadows, of pastures grazed with livestock, and hedgerows teeming with wildlife. And yet, by the time James inherited the farm, it was barely recognizable. The men and women had vanished from the fields; the old stone barns had crumbled; the skies had emptied of birds and their wind-blown song.

Peter Noble's narration ruined this book for me.

The choice of Peter Noble as narrator of this book was such a poor one. His reading ruined the book for me. Such a huge disappointment.

Historia
Some people's lives are entirely their own creations. James Rebanks' isn't. He's the first son of a shepherd who was the first son of a shepherd himself; his family have lived and worked in the Lake District of Northern England for generations, further back than recorded history. It's a part of the world known mainly for its romantic descriptions by Wordsworth and the much-loved illustrated children's books of Beatrix Potter. But James' world is quite different. His way of life is ordered by the seasons and the work they demand.

BRYAN DICK BRINGS THIS BOOK ALIVE
Revisado: 08-18-21
Bryan Dick's narration of this book brought it alive and made it a delightful listen. I've recommended it to all my family.

Historia
Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

LAUGH OUT LOUD FUNNY
Revisado: 07-18-17
What made the experience of listening to A Man Called Ove the most enjoyable?
It caught me by surprise because the characters seemed to be so real - funny, witty. The pacing is good and there is an abundance of pathos.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The cat! She shows us that Ove does have honest, decent emotions but expressing them around humans is hard/impossible for him. She fills the void left by Sonja providing Ove with a reason to get up every morning and provides him with companionship. The cat is as aloof and difficult as Ove - and, like Sonja before her, succeeds in finding a place into his heart.
Which scene was your favorite?
The one where he defeats the whitecoats who have come to take Rune away. All his adult life he has been dealing with bureaucrats and has been plagued by their unreasonableness and unkindness. In this scene he applies all the knowledge he has gained over decades and uses it to help Anita and Rune overcoming his long held, misguided beliefs about them and their friendship.
If you could take any character from A Man Called Ove out to dinner, who would it be and why?
I think I would take Sonja out to dinner because she is portrayed in such a positive light, no matter what and has such a great disposition.

Historia
Acclaimed scientist Hope Jahren has built three laboratories in which she's studied trees, flowers, seeds, and soil. Her first book might have been a revelatory treatise on plant life. Lab Girl is that, but it is also so much more. Because in it, Jahren also shares with us her inspiring life story, in prose that takes your breath away.

WONDERFUL NARRATION BY THE AUTHOR HERSELF
Revisado: 07-18-17
Would you listen to Lab Girl again? Why?
I might if it were a book club selection and I needed to refresh my memory about the exact details.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Bill! Most of this book is about the unique relationship Hope Jahren and Bill Hapogian share. At times it beggars belief - you couldn't make this stuff up! The way the two scientist play off of one another is magical, funny.
Have you listened to any of Hope Jahren’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Nope. I loved that Hope narrated this herself because of the emotion she portrayed so beautifully and honestly. She reads from the heart - something one never experiences when someone other than the author does the narration.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
behind the scenes with mad scientists.
