Former spy Maggie Bird came to the seaside village of Purity, Maine, eager to put the past behind her after a mission went tragically wrong. My 1st Buffa novel. I will be back for more. Court room drama at its best. Memorable characters. A plot which keeps you involved. Descriptions and phrasing which excel at allowing the reader to see and feel what the characters are experiencing.

Historia
It's a story almost too tawdry to be true—a con woman prostitute who met the descendant of a Founding Father in a brothel, duped him into marriage using an infant purchased from a baby farm, then went to prison for stabbing the couple's baby nurse—all while in a common-law marriage with another man. The scandal surrounding Evangeline and Robert Ray Hamilton, though little known today, was one of the sensations of the Gilded Age.

Scandal was never far from the Hamiltons
Revisado: 07-02-23
Robert Ray Hamilton, one of the great grandsons of Alexander Hamilton, one of the best known founding fathers of America, led a erratic life and died in a hunting accident far from the New York fame and fortune to which he was an heir. Bill Shaffer does a wonderful job reconstructing the life and times of Ray Hamilton from the archives of the daily newspapers, large and small, which served as the only source of national information in the Gilded Age of the U. S. More documentary the novel the book will be enjoyed by history buffs. #edcinpacomments

A different perspective on Racism
Revisado: 07-26-20
Ibram Kendi likens racism to cancer. He challenges all of us to focus on eradicating racist policies and ideas which are the insidious cancer cells ravaging the body of America and the world. The racist policies and ideas destroying us have only been around for about 600 years. They were born out of the struggles for economic power of European nations like Spain and Portugal initially. Atherton idea that one race was better than another allowed for the concept of slavery. And so it began. Kendi challenges all of us not to focus on people but rather on policy. There are good and bad in all races and no individual or group of people is responsible for or representative of their entire race. Anti racism is the opposite of racism. Claiming to be “not racist” does nothing for the world. It is burying your head in the sand. We need to stand against policies and ideas which do not treat all races with equity. Integration and assimilation are not the answer because they presume one race is better than another. It takes awhile to wrap your mind around these ideas but for me the perspective is clarifying and enlightening. The concepts apply to all forms of discrimination which are all rooted in unequal power and the maintenance of that power and the perception of my status quo is better than yours. Think of racism, sexism, ageism, and on and on.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Overkill written beautifully
Revisado: 09-16-19
“The Goldfinch” is a large book - 700+ pages (more than 32 hours of listening in my case). Donna Tartt dazzles us with images and words like few others authors in my limited lifelong experience. However what she has done in the end, at least for me, is to transcribe multiple cliches endlessly. Things like “bad behavior can produce good outcomes”. “We begin as nothing and will become nothing in the end” “We all interpret reality in our own way”. I loved the characters more than I loved the story.

What do the $350 million Ford Motor Company disaster known as the Edsel, the fast and incredible rise of Xerox, and the unbelievable scandals at General Electric and Texas Gulf Sulphur have in common? Each is an example of how an iconic company was defined by a particular moment of fame or notoriety; these notable and fascinating accounts are as relevant today to understanding the intricacies of corporate life as they were when the events happened.

Interesting stories from a prior age
Revisado: 07-18-19
This book was like reading declassified information from 50 years earlier. Interesting but not overly useful. The relations between citizens and their governments, between employees and their employers and between the availability of information to those who create it and those who consume it are as different as black and white.
