Historia
Breathless is story of SARs-CoV-2 and its fierce journey through the human population, as seen by the scientists who study its origin, its ever-changing nature, and its capacity to kill us. David Quammen expertly shows how strange new viruses emerge from animals into humans as we disrupt wild ecosystems and how those viruses adapt to their human hosts, sometimes causing global catastrophe. He explains why this coronavirus will probably be a “forever virus,” destined to circulate among humans and bedevil us endlessly, in one variant form or another.

Loved it!
Revisado: 03-10-23
David Quammen is one of my favorite writers, so this review could be considered biased. If you like his writing style and his humor and have an interest in the genomic history of Sars Cov 2, than you'll like this book. I work in veterinary medicine with zoo animals, have a passion for bat conservation and enjoy learning about the different fields of science as related to human and animal interactios... Therefore most all of David Quammen's books are fascinating to me! The narrator did a good job too, easy to listen too and scientific names were pronounced correctly!

Historia
Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead. There are dangers and adventures in the graveyard for a boy. But if Bod leaves the graveyard, then he will come under attack from the man Jack - who has already killed Bod's family…

Just wonderful!

I enjoy all Neil Gaiman books. This one was especially wonderful and fun. A story different than any other. Neil's imagination and story telling makes it fun to escape into the worlds of his characters. The full cast of voices makes for a fantastic audio book. I do hope that we get to check on Bod in the future and see what he's up to!

Historia
For millennia, lions, tigers, and their man-eating kin have kept our dark, scary forests dark and scary, and their predatory majesty has been the stuff of folklore. But by the year 2150 big predators may only exist on the other side of glass barriers and chain-link fences. Their gradual disappearance is changing the very nature of our existence. We no longer occupy an intermediate position on the food chain; instead we survey it invulnerably from above - so far above that we are in danger of forgetting that we even belong to an ecosystem.

Predators and people. Its a great book!
Revisado: 07-14-15
I am a fan of Quammen's books and this one is right in there with the rest. Its full of insight on local and global politics as they relate to conservation attempts for these large predators. If full of natural history and local history. Stories of native peoples interactions with large predators over many generations. And there are always Quammen's quirky comments that make you laugh as you follow the stories. I would recommend this book to any who have conservation interests and can tolerate historical details. Narrator is good, just takes a few chapters to get into his reading tone. I'd listen to this again.
