Historia
Forty thousand years in the past, the last family of Neanderthals roams the earth. After a crushingly hard winter, their numbers are low, but Girl, the oldest daughter, is just coming of age, and her family is determined to travel to the annual meeting place and find her a mate. But the unforgiving landscape takes its toll, and Girl is left alone to care for Runt, a foundling of unknown origin. As Girl and Runt face the coming winter storms, Girl realizes she has one final chance to save her people, even if it means sacrificing part of herself.

Disappointing
Revisado: 09-17-23
I didn't care for this book. I enjoyed the parts set in the past with Girl, for the most part, but Rose, of present day, was one of the most unlikable characters I've ever come across. She's incredibly arrogant regardinng her work, and naive regarding her pregnancy, motherhood, and post-partum plans of work. She's also very inconsiderate and, dare I say, downright cruel to her partner and father of her child. Stubborn, arrogant and defensive, I couldn't make myself like her. And to top it all off-the book ended in the middle of nowhere! Very sudden. I found myself looking forward to what was going to happen next to Girl, and suddenly the end credits play. I was so surprised that I thought I had accidentally skipped some chapters, but I had not. To me, it was a very unsatisfactory ending to a very disappointing story. Would not recommend.

What an obnoxious "protagonist"
Revisado: 07-08-21
I struggled to listen to this. Margaret is one of the most annoying, obnoxious, self-righteous, hypocritical and jealous characters I've ever read! I spent half of this audiobook saying out loud "oh my God shut UP" every time she talked. It was only my ocd that made me finish this.

Historia
Philippa Gregory's first story in the best-selling Wideacre trilogy. A compelling tale of passion and intrigue set in the 18th century. From the author of The Other Boleyn Girl and The Virgin's Lover. Wideacre Hall, set in the heart of the English countryside, is the ancestral home that Beatrice Lacey loves. But as a woman of the 18th century, she has no right of inheritance. Corrupted by a world that mistreats women, she sets out to corrupt others.

Messed up
Revisado: 12-19-20
I feel like this book struggled to get going. It was boring for a while...and at times it concentrates too much on flowery descriptions of the scenery. At other times, it was just too messed up. The "heroine" Beatrice is a horrible person. She ruins lives without thought nor blame to herself. Her mantra is "it wasn't my fault". She's selfish and evil. She's also depraved...she lusts for her idiotic perverted brother and bears two incestuous bastards which she then manipulates others into believing the children are theirs. She's a horrible person and you are rooting for the supporting characters to give Beatrice what she deserves. In the end, her evil scheming destroys her and everything she ever loved...but the reader will feel it is her just desserts. Reading this book was like passing a train wreck. I despised Beatrice, but I had to finish the book to find out what happens to her. Even now, knowing how it ended, I find myself questioning whether it was worth it.
