Really enjoyed this.
Revisado: 05-19-21
The narration and the writing were excellent and I loved the characters. The only fault I could find was minor and this book kept me entertained through hours of driving. Will look for other McKinty books.

Historia
The Big Miss is Hank Haney's candid and surprisingly insightful account of his tumultuous six-year journey with Tiger Woods, during which the supremely gifted golfer collected six major championships and rewrote golf history. Hank was one of the very few people allowed behind the curtain. He was with Tiger 110 days a year, spoke to him over 200 days a year, and stayed at his home up to 30 days a year, observing him in nearly every circumstance....

I loved this book
Revisado: 02-04-18
I have read many golf books over the years and this has to be one of the best. I know some reviewers thought it was too much of a tell-all book and some thought it too technical, but I disagree. I think Haney treated Woods' personal problems with respect and treated Woods, the person, with fairness. There's a balance between his respect for Woods as the greatest golfer ever and his understanding of the character traits that both put him there and robbed him of feelings for others. As for his explanations of various swing problems and corrections, I found them understandable. Maybe non-golfers would not, but I don't see them reading this book anyway. As I say, I loved it.
P.S. Someone complained about a voice being dubbed in occasionally. I think it was Haney re-reading sentences where he screwed up and didn't find it a problem.

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

One of the best books I have ever read.
Revisado: 12-19-17
Okay, I didn't read it, I listened to it, but I realized early on how woefully ignorant I was about the Civil War, Reconstruction, and Grant himself. This is not only a great story about a great man with equally great flaws--notably his inability to judge the people closest to him--it is a fine history of those years. I am better for having read it.

Historia
Philip Kerr’s intricate novels featuring former Berlin homicide detective Bernie Gunther have earned ahallowed place in the hearts of mystery fans. It’s 1950, and Bernie has arrived in Argentina seeking asylum after being falsely identified as a Nazi war criminal. There he investigates the murder of a wealthy banker’s daughter ina case reminiscent of one he worked in Germany 18 years before.

I listen to lots of audio books and I'd put this in the top 5%. Great characters, plot lines, and nice sense of humor throughout. Warning, there is a torture scene near the end that is really tough to take. It is essential to the story, not gratuitous, but as I say, difficult. Balancing that out is the deep love that evolves as the story progresses. I will probably listen to this book again.

Historia
A debut novel in the vein of Greene and le Carré, A Dying Breed is a brilliant and gripping story of the politics of news reporting, intrigue and blood set between the dark halls of Whitehall, the shadowy corridors of the BBC and the perilous streets of Kabul, in the shadowy le Carré-esque world of foreign correspondents reporting from war zones around the world. Carver, an old BBC hack, is warned off a story when a bomb goes off, killing a local official in Kabul, but his instincts tell him something isn't quite right....

Maybe my top book of the year.
Revisado: 06-15-17
I love this genre, and I was really impressed, both by the story and the characters, and by the narration, which was wonderful. It's a nice change from the usual mystery novels, set mostly in Afghanistan with a burned out BBC reporter as the unlikely hero. All the characters are vivid, nuanced, and as I say, it ranks among the best books of the year.

Revisado: 10-31-16
Sometimes, when I'm feeling frugal, I go back and listen to a book from my audible library. This one holds up really well, both in the depth of the characters and the story lines. Not many books can do that and the narrator is perfect for this novel.

Mystery, romance, mystery.
Revisado: 08-05-16
I love mystery novels and this is kind of a mystery/romance combination that works well because the characters are vividly drawn and attract your attention immediately. It's a fine plot, or series of interconnected plots, and the narration is excellent. As a man, I'm not big on romance novels but this love interest is well done and compelling. I say give it a listen and I think you'll enjoy it a lot.

I listened to this a few months ago and then plugged it into my car and listened again. It's a fine story, with great characters and lots of twists. I'm not a computer geek, but I liked all the cyber aspects of it and I'm a sucker for tales where underdogs go up against the establishment. One of my favorites.

And things get interesting when he meets a French war criminal and member of the French SS who has been posing as a German Wehrmacht officer.

Revisado: 02-22-16
I found Philip Kerr's novels a few months ago and have gone through five of them. This one I'm listening to for the second time, picking up twists I missed before and enjoying it as much as I did on the first listen. I think Paul Hecht captures the noir flavor perfectly and will look for other books he's narrated. I've read hundreds of mysteries over the years and Philip Kerr's novels rank with the very best.
