Historia
Unblinded is the true story of New Yorker Kevin Coughlin, who became blind at age 36 due to a rare genetic disorder known as Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy. Twenty years later, without medical intervention, Kevin's sight miraculously started to return. He is the only known person in the world who has experienced a spontaneous, non-medically assisted regeneration of the optic nerve. Unblinded follows Kevin's descent into darkness and his unexplained reemergence to sight.

Historia
Tender at the Bone is the story of a life determined, enhanced, and defined in equal measure by unforgettable people, the love of tales well-told, and a passion for food. In other words, the stuff of the best literature. The journey begins with Reichl's mother, the notorious food-poisoner known forevermore as the Queen of Mold, and moves on to the fabled Mrs. Peavey, one-time Baltimore socialite millionairess, and, for a brief but poignant moment, retained as Reichl's maid.

Title sums up both a theme and her topic.
Revisado: 08-05-19
Reichl's earlier memoir is both heartbreaking and clever. The daughter of a bi-polar mother, she exhibits all the emotional distress of these children but deals with them mostly with humor. Later, in "Save me the Plumbs," she manages to resolve one of her major symptoms of having grown up with a mother who was always changing. I'd advise reading "Bone" first and then "Plus."

Obama's Light into her Amazing Life
Revisado: 01-21-19
Michelle Obama's story is an improbable one that we all know is true. Her ascent from the South Side of Chicago to the White House, and incidentally becoming America's most admired woman, has the ring of Cinderella. She is a national treasure, a woman to be emulated. She has much to teach girls and young woman and still much guidance to offer us all.
Unlike many author=read books, she is a practiced reader and her own voice adds much to the recording.

Nearly a half century into being a feminist and legal pioneer, something funny happened to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg: The octogenarian won the Internet. Across America, people who weren't even born when Ginsburg made her name are tattooing themselves with her face, setting her famously searing dissents to music, and making viral videos in tribute.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Overblown and exaggerated
Revisado: 04-19-18
Would you try another book from J. D. Vance and/or J. D. Vance?
No. He's not a good writer. He may be able to write legal briefs, but he fails at creative writing.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
His personal story was both the most and the least successful. He writes of his early years as a mere chronology. Only in writing his later years does he reflect on his life.
What three words best describe J. D. Vance’s voice?
unreflective. exaggerated conclusions. narrow vision.
Could you see Hillbilly Elegy being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
I hope not. It would be a boring film.
Any additional comments?
From a small sample from Kentucky, Vance generalizes to all residents of Appalachia.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Powerful Memories
Revisado: 04-08-18
Would you try another book from Tara Westover and/or Julia Whelan?
Absolutely. I hope to be able to do so soon.
What did you like best about this story?
What grips the imagination is her total honesty, even about her own shortcomings. She is a brilliant woman yet failed to grasp her blind areas for years.
Which character – as performed by Julia Whelan – was your favorite?
Tara, of course.
Did Educated inspire you to do anything?
Yes, she inspires me to comprehend the enormous power of keeping journals.
Any additional comments?
"Educated" is probably the most powerful memoir I've read in years.

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Life under apartheid
Revisado: 03-03-18
Where does Born a Crime rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
The book is interesting in that it gives us both an idea of life under apartheid and a boy's growing up. Noah details it well, but the entire story isn't a "page turner" and Noah's memoirs rank about mid-range in those other memoirs I've listened to.
Would you be willing to try another book from Trevor Noah? Why or why not?
Definitely.
Which character – as performed by Trevor Noah – was your favorite?
Well, Trevor, of course, but his mother is also a fascinating woman.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not exactly.
Any additional comments?
Trevor reads very well.

Desperately Needing an Editor
Revisado: 08-16-17
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Cutting it down to about half the length.
Has Homo Deus turned you off from other books in this genre?
Certainly not. There aren't many writers who can get a book this length published.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Derek Perkins?
Yes. He was good.
What character would you cut from Homo Deus?
The author.
Any additional comments?
This author proceeds from a questionable statement, that of the Cognitive Revolution, to embellish all sorts of theories and add nearly every bit of information at his disposal. His conclusions are interesting and bear discussing, but we learn of them only after many tedious hours.

Historia
When Germany invaded Poland, bombers devastated Warsaw - and the city's zoo along with it. With most of their animals dead, zookeepers Jan and Antonina Zabinski began smuggling Jews into the empty cages. Another dozen "guests" hid inside the Zabinskis' villa, emerging after dark for dinner, socializing, and, during rare moments of calm, piano concerts.

Powerful story expertly read
Revisado: 06-20-17
Would you consider the audio edition of The Zookeeper's Wife to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version, but it would be hard to imagine how the audio version isn't 100% better: it's expertly read.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Well, the heroine, of course, who seemed immensely competent.
Which scene was your favorite?
The one describing the badger using Rich's chamber pot.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No, Ackerman does not "play to the crowd" and evoke hysterics: she presents the story in a calm, measured voice.
Any additional comments?
The reader made it come alive for me, changing her voice for each character, and obviously of Polish background, pronouncing all the Polish names and places. Excellent!

Must reading
Revisado: 05-14-17
Would you consider the audio edition of Two Years Before the Mast to be better than the print version?
Yes, unless the reader is a sailor and knows the pronunciation of the technical terms. The reader was excellent in mastering these unknown terms.
What other book might you compare Two Years Before the Mast to and why?
I know of no other.
What about Athur Addison’s performance did you like?
His pronunciation appeared accurate, and he dramatized the various characters.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. It needs time to digest and to research the geography of various locations mentioned, especially in the area near the Anartic.
Any additional comments?
Should be required reading in all California high schools.
