Historia
Celebrated for her innovative literary bravura, Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) settled into a bustling Paris at the turn of the 20th century, never again to return to her native America. While in Paris, she not only surrounded herself with - and tirelessly championed the careers of - a remarkable group of young expatriate artists but also solidified herself as "one of the most controversial figures of American letters" (New York Times).

This is an eloquently narrated novel that challenges traditional structure while commenting on the absurdity of certain parts of culture in the 20th century.

Historia
Nightwood, Djuna Barnes's strange and sinuous tour de force novel unfolds in the decadent shadows of Europe's great cities, Paris, Berlin, and Vienna - a world in which the boundaries of class, religion, and sexuality are bold but surprisingly porous. The outsized characters who inhabit this world are some of the most memorable in all of fiction.

Important modernist novel inhibited by narration.
Revisado: 02-03-24
Like the introduction states, I listened to this novel because I had only knew of its importance. I was unable to engage in the text, largely due to the narration. The narrators voice would be perfect for a documentary, or anything that required a reporting of facts. I found myself listening at 1.5x speed to attempt to stay engaged

Historia
In this trenchant twentieth-century satire, George S. Schuyler—fearless provocateur of the Harlem Renaissance—asked: What if there were an invention that could turn everyone’s skin pork-belly pink? Would the plague of white supremacy subside? Would Black people be able to avoid persistent social and economic prejudice? Would the entire arbitrary notion of race become a thing of the past?

Revisado: 01-21-24
This a must-read satire of the issue of race in the United States. Many of the concepts brought forth are still relevant today. The narrator maintains a brilliant performance throughout the novel and maintains engagement throughout.

Historia
A thrilling and revelatory narrative of one of the most epic and consequential periods in 20th century history - the Arab Revolt and the secret “great game” to control the Middle East. Lawrence in Arabia definitively overturns received wisdom on how the modern Middle East was formed. Sweeping in its action, keen in its portraiture, acid in its condemnation of the destruction wrought by European colonial plots, this is a book that brilliantly captures the way in which the folly of the past creates the anguish of the present.

A Captivating Tale of Systemic Failure
Revisado: 12-19-23
This is one of the most eloquent depictions of history I have ever read/listened to. The book takes an unbiased approach to garner truths of the middle eastern conflict during WWI. Additionally, provides an excellent analysis on the thought process and decisions of many of the key players which shaped history.

Historia
Widely regarded as Sadegh Hedayat's masterpiece, The Blind Owl is the most important work of literature to come out of Iran in the past century. On the surface, this work seems to be a tale of doomed love, but soon basic facts become obscure and the listener realizes this book is much more than a love story. Although The Blind Owl has been compared to the works of Kafka and Poe, it defies categorization. By preserving the spirit as well as the structure of Hedayat's writing, this edition brings the English listener into the world of The Blind Owl as never before.

A dark and complex journal entry
Revisado: 10-09-23
This story requires attention to detail as it is essentially a repetitive series of journal entries/ a confession of despair. If it is approached within that context, it will be thoroughly enjoyed, but if not, it will seem confusing, repetitive and having no plot.
The performance was spectacular. The narrator’s voice entailed the emotion that was present and emphasis on certain words painted a vivid picture of the world of which the protagonist lived.

Great book to listen to searching for the answers
Revisado: 09-29-23
I think this book should be required reading/listening for every service member/ first responder. As a member of both communities, I have frequently struggled with many of the concepts brought forth in this text. The narrative is incredible, the lessons learned are down to earth and will provide introspection to anyone who has had any amount of adversity in their life.
This is not the typical “war hero, team guy book” this is a live look in to the struggles of a person in a certain profession and how to overcome them.

Historia
Eleven years have passed sub Lieutenant John Dunbar became Dances With Wolves and married Stands With A Fist, a white-born woman raised as a Comanche from early childhood. With their three children, they live peacefully in the village of Ten Bears. But there is unease in the air, caused by increased reports of violent confrontations with white soldiers, who want to drive the Comanches onto reservations. Disquiet turns to horror, and then to rage, when a band of white rangers descends on Ten Bear's village, slaughtering half its inhabitants and abducting Stands With A Fist and her baby.

I listened to this shortly after finishing reading Dances with Wolves. The initial story was about a man learning a new way of life and finding purpose. This story is about the death of that way of life.

Historia
Ordered to hold an abandoned army post, John Dunbar found himself alone, beyond the edge of civilization. Thievery and survival soon forced him into the Indian camp, where he began a dangerous adventure that changed his life forever. Set in 1863, the novel follows Lieutenant John Dunbar on a magical journey from the ravages of the Civil War to the far reaches of the imperiled American frontier, a frontier he naively wants to see "before it is gone".

If you have ever wondered what is was like to be an explorer in the unspoiled American West of the early 1800s, then this is the audiobook for you. Not only a groundbreaking work of American history by critically acclaimed author Robert M. Utley, A Life Wild and Perilous is also a dramatic story of innovation and survival. Here is your chance to live in the very heart of the American wilderness with legendary trappers and mountain men like Jim Bridger, Kit Carson, Tom Fitzpatrick, and Jedediah Smith.

Great perspective book
Revisado: 07-14-21
As Americans, we constantly fantasize about stories of the old west. This is the book that puts them together. Most people have heard the names of these frontier legends, but do not truly understand the reality of their perilous lives and their role in developing the western frontier in the first half of the 19th century. I would highly recommend this to anyone willing to learn about our development as a nation.
