Historia
Streetlight is small town that most people couldn’t find on a map. If you actually live in Streetlight, though, you definitely know where you stand: you're either a Have-Not or a Have-A-Lot—it's been this way as long as anyone can remember and no one ever forgets the difference. If you’re not from Streetlight, you're probably thinking that what some people have a lot of is money. That’s true, but it’s not the whole story—not even close. Some things are much more valuable than money, especially in Streetlight.

Original and magical
Revisado: 02-11-25
A captivating tale, with excellent readers bringing the young protagonists to life with realism and charm. Without giving too much away: the author has found a fresh way to tackle some longstanding sci-fi & fantasy tropes, and to have her characters puzzle through them with us right at their sides. Well-crafted, very human magic throughout.

Historia
Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

Still astonishing, beautiful and devastating
Revisado: 01-16-25
If I were a billionaire (and hadn’t lost my soul becoming one), I’d make sure every American received a free copy of this epic audiobook. Steinbeck’s classic, read with such great skill and impact by Dylan Baker, brings to life the timeless struggle against corruption, wealth and power. Brilliant storytelling that leaves one starving for justice.

Hidden Gem
Revisado: 08-14-24
A wonderful artifact from Soviet sci-fi. More psychological than action-packed, the clever story remains fresh - and the narrator brings the characters to life with great down-to-earth color and humanity. Without giving too much away, don’t expect tons of cinematic action, or a Hollywood crescendo ending. (And perhaps skip the author’s postscript, which is mostly about the challenges of publishing in the old Soviet Union.)

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Another classic example of King’s imaginative story-telling. Familiar themes and tricks, but nonetheless fresh and covering some new territory. Excellent narration adds to the enjoyment of this satisfying yarn.

Disappointed.
Revisado: 06-22-24
The storytelling was clunky, and the narrator’s tendency to deliver every sentence with the same breathy cadence robbed the author’s words of any music they might have had. Intriguing but impossible to finish.

Tasty nuggets.
Revisado: 11-12-23
This collection was a delight. Weir demonstrates a knack for the short form, and the narrators hit the right balance of letting the author’s words speak for themselves and providing a dramatic interpretation. Even the stories that mine well worn themes are given some surprising, creative touches. Short, sweet, leaning ne wanting more.

Quaint and easy
Revisado: 11-11-23
This book is an uncomplicated and easy to digest throwback of a story. Don’t expect subtle writing or prods to think too hard. It’s just charming enough to overcome the treacle in the narration. Sometimes a simple pleasure like this is what we need… but I am not likely to return to this series now that I get what it’s about.

Historia
When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food-delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization”. Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on. What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at at least. In an alternate dimension, dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm and human-free world.

Fun read, flawed reading
Revisado: 10-28-23
An admittedly light novel, Scalzi hits his mark in the storytelling: not heavy, fast moving, a “pop song” of a book. I’m not a fan of the common audiobook narration approach that pretends the book is a radio play - and one that should be overacted wherever possible. Wheaton’s characterizations were, to my taste, too snarky and obnoxious. I wish he’d had a different director! But the book itself is still enjoyable inventive fluff.

Revisado: 07-31-23
The recurring characters are already like old friends, as are the protagonists. A solid mystery, well told and well read. Comfy - without a lot of new inspiration, but still very satisfying.
