Historia
The summer in question started out with hot, fun-filled days and new friendships. We had just turned thirteen and had our whole lives ahead of us. But that was before her. Before we became known as the Hixton Five and our lives become defined by one night. It’s hard to believe twenty years have passed since she was locked away. But now she’s free and strange things have started to happen. When I close my eyes, the creeping anxiety and fear is overwhelming and all too real. Because the monster is back, and I know she has a score to settle with us.

To twist or not to twist…
Revisado: 06-11-24
I liked the book a lot, the performance was great. My only issue is that the twists at the end of the book seemed a little forced. Except for the major twist of who was behind the murders, which did give us pause when it came to picking out our killer, we didn’t really get any other snippets of info making us guess about the other things revealed at the end. They were kind of just revealed. Over all I would rate this book a 3.75 and would still recommend it.

The same billionaire trope done one too many times…
Revisado: 06-08-24
This book was on my book club list for this year and it was… ok. At this point I have read a LOT of romance books and this one, though it was cute, came up a bit short. Like I mentioned it was cute but the “billionaire office romance” is a trope that has been done one too many times and without something truly unique to set it apart it just quietly fades into the background. There wasn’t really anything amazing about the characters or storyline that really stood out or gave that feeling of “I HAVE to know what happens next!” Even the spicy scenes were pretty predictable.
Both Narrators were also ok. A bit too robotic for my taste.

Beautifully disturbing
Revisado: 04-30-24
“To be groomed is to be loved and to be handled like a precious and delicate thing.”
Ooff… Let that quote sink in a min. THAT is how disturbing and deep this book is. This novel delivers a message that just cannot be ignored. Though the subject matter is extremely disturbing and dark, there is an undeniably profound message here that begs to be heard and shared. It very graphically depicts the not only the manipulation and confusion the victims suffer through, but the LIFE LONG consequences that can result from sexual assault.
Not everyone experiences SA the same way or recovers from it. The same goes with choosing to speak out and bring past events into the open or not and some of the reasons behind those decisions. This book really drives that message home.
Without a doubt a book that’s thought provoking, enthralling, and one that’ll stay with the reader for a very long time.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

A MUST read for everyone
Revisado: 04-24-24
I am at a complete loss of words to adequately describe the beauty and genius behind this book. It’s gut wrenching, it’s heartfelt, it’s devastating, and powerful, but beyond all of that this book is impactful. It’s a story that I will reread a million times and that’ll stay with me forever.
Before this, my number one WWII book that I always recommended to people was The Things We Cannot Say by Kelly Rimmer, and though I still absolutely love that book and will always hold a special place in my heart, this book has taken the number one spot for my favorite historical fiction. I had learned some about the occupation of France through other WWII historical fictions, but The Nightingale really goes in depth about what life was like for the people left behind after all of the men were called away to serve in the war or sent to the “working camps.” I feel like the survival of these people is many times overlooked in books and movies because it’s not as horrific as what we see in pictures and in the evidence left behind from the concentration camps, but what they experienced and how they managed to survive is not only worthy of mention but awe inspiring. So many of us don’t know the massive role the French Resistance played in winning the war. The many ways they helped the allies and fought against the German occupation. I loved that this books brings to light so many aspects of the war that are not often talked about.
I simply cannot say enough good things about this book. A jewel from beginning to end.

One of my only returns
Revisado: 04-20-24
Let me start off by saying right off that bat that I LOVED this book. The story was great. The awareness of bipolar disorder, great. What I couldn’t stand… the Narrators. Specially the male narrator. I made it as far as him completely butchering the French in this book and had to stop and return the audiobook then and there. His narration was already terrible but when there is another language and the narrator doesn’t bother to do their research to learn the correct pronunciation of the words… nope, couldn’t stomach it.
I love the author and still wanted to support her so I immediately got on her website and ordered the physical book, but I just couldn’t continue to listen to the terrible narration because it was ruining the book for me.
Sad to see it’s the same narrators for the next two books. I guess I will just have to read them myself.

Not continuing series…
Revisado: 12-29-23
This is where I get off. I got through the first book (which was extremely underwhelming) thinking, HOPING the next one would get better. It did not…
This reads very much like a YA book and that is NOT what I was looking for. This was my first vampire series and I wanted blood, I wanted destruction, I wanted the romance! I got none of it. The romance in these first 2 books is extremely PG, seriously not even PG13, and literally NOTHING happens in this second book as far as the story goes. They find out how the war between the humans and vampires got started. That is IT. That is literally the only interesting thing that happens in this book. Sorry but it was a waste of time. This book should say it’s YA because it’s definitely not a true adult speed vampire series. The narrator also sounds extremely young which is what you would expect for a 17 yo protagonist but the voices she makes for the other characters are terrible. I almost didn’t finish the book I was so another with the whole thing but I don’t like leaving reviews if I didn’t take the time to completely finish a book. So there you go. If you’re a teen looking for a sappy long winded romance with very little violence this is for you. Adults looking for true romance, gore, and depth of characters…. Move on.

Absolutely mind blowing
Revisado: 12-11-23
From the opening remarks by Anonymous, who the story is about, to the last poem from Pablo Neruda, this book is gut wrenchingly powerful. You will not be able to put it down. We have all read and seen movies of affairs staring the easily seduced man in the relationship. But this is the first time I hear a tale so emotionally raw and candid from a woman in an illicit relationship. The author takes us on a whirlwind of a wild ride. We get privy to all of the dirty, heart shattering and unbelievable details of Anonymous’s deception. I can’t even fathom the courage it took for Anonymous to share such a painful and tragic story to author E. K. Blair. I couldn’t help but imagine myself in her position the entire time I was wrapped up in this story, feeling the self loathing and hatred she felt for herself and yet at the same time being unable to stop.
A cautionary tale for ALL married women and an absolute must read. Buckle up because you’re in for an unforgettable ride.

All spice no plot
Revisado: 11-27-23
If spice is what you’re after and don’t care to have a good story line this is the book for you. I love spice but it has to be accompanied with a good juicy story. The story here was minimal, if that. The male narrator was also a terrible choice for this story. Having a grandpa reading all of those erotic scenes just felt wrong somehow… Sorry but this was not my cup of tea

Please do NOT DNF!!!
Revisado: 11-23-23
One of my few 5 star listens this year. YES the start is painfully slow and confusing and I strongly believe it’s the reason why so many people say they have DNF this book. But if you hang in there long enough I PROMISE you will be glad you did. You will be handsomely rewarded with painstakingly thought out and beautifully developed characters that you can’t help but love, hate, and suspect all at the same time. A story line that keeps you at the edge of your seat with unexpected plot twists and turns that all lead you to a gripping conclusion. Believe me, you’re in for a thrilling ride. The way this book was written so that the reader only knows as much as the main character is able to uncover while within each of his hosts is just masterful! I’ve never read anything like it.
Don’t be so quick to give up and discard this book. Give it the opportunity to do what it was intended to do. Take you on a wild ride unlike anything you’ve experienced before. Enjoy!

Why 4 stars and not 5…
Revisado: 10-27-23
Please don’t come for me about the 4 stars. Hear me out… The Ravenhood series is by far my favorite romance series of ALL time. I adore everything about them. Just like I adored THIS book. The story, the characters, how it all comes full circle in the end. However, I know that there’s no way I can be the only person out there that feels the following way. I have read multiple books that were later told in the “guys perspective” and they all told the SAME story only we got to experience their inner thoughts during shared situations with the female character, which is what I feel like we all want. (Midnight Sun, Grey just to name a few)
Now I completely understand that Kate was trying to be unique in that respect right, she told the story from Doms point of view, but when she got to the parts we already had knowledge about from Flock she omitted the complete retelling in the moment the instances were taking place! Personally I wanted the reminder. I wanted ALL the details retold by Dom. Not just the “cliff notes” and his thoughts and feeling about the situations AFTER the fact! I prepared for this book by rereading ALL THREE in the series right before starting this one and I STILL had to stop listening to this book during those parts and pick up Flock again before returning to One Last Rainy Day to then get Doms aftermath. I truly hated having to do that. I mean come ON! Hello… chapter 25!?!? I wanted to relive the entirety of that moment through Dom! And like I said I CANT be alone in that one…. Other than that one pet peeve, flawless. A beautiful addition to an already amazing series.
