This is a terrific precursor to Rayne's return. Seeing Rayne and Everett's first encounter gives more clarity to the next book.

Perfect short story to add to the series. I loved getting a bit more of the back story as to how they came to be after seeing glimpses of them in other books.

This story was another excellent addition to the Love in Mission City series. Everett and Rayne meet a second time and it isn't hearts and flowers. Everett was hurt by Rayne's Cinderella act. Rayne is running for his life and holding onto some dangerous secrets. Rayne is also leery of being attached to anyone. His family has shown him that he needs to guard his heart. It doesn't take long for both men to fall entirely, it's just admitting it that is the problem. We get to see plenty of old friends and meet some new ones. The ending left me with a smile.

It is told in succession from each of the six main characters. Duncan is stoic. Willie is sweet and shy. Both are ghosts that can be seen by at least one living being. Holden and his best gal pal Peyton are true friends that stand together as the only two known queer kids at school. Oliver is the new kid on the block but having a black uncle makes him the target of some school bigots. Juliette is living under the pressure of perfection. Her parents expect great things from her, but she struggles to fit into their mold. I loved how these six came together to form a tribe. They give each other the support to find and live their true selves.

I was surprised by how the story played out the 'twin brother' mix-up trope. Asher and Dusty have to deal with the usual but once they find each other they are completely committed. I wanted to throttle Asher's brother and shake Asher for keeping himself in a bad situation because of Archer. The reconciliation Dusty has with his own sibling is a bonus.

This is a perfect book to get you in the holiday spirit. Ryan and Simeon both struggle with some big issues. I loved that Ryan never seems to notice Simeon's stutter; it's just part of who he is. Simeon is a quiet presence and rock for Ryan, giving him someone to help ground him. Simeon's grandparents were a wonderful influence on both men. I was delighted to see so many heroes from previous stories make an appearance.

I admit I had a bit of a chip on my shoulder with Anthony. His behavior in the book, which features Hugh and Oscar, left a bad impression. Seeing how he gave so much of himself to Scott and the twins had me changing my mind about him. Anthony and Scott open themselves up and expose their pasts to build a solid and deep relationship. I loved their devotion to each other and their babies. The ending is so hopeful that I'm crossing my fingers that Gabbi writes us a follow-up.

The storyline includes a romance but I see it as being about Ethan navigating his life. His inner monologue is snarky, self-recriminating and flagellating, by turns, funny and, at moments, a bit dark. His loneliness is more than evident. Meeting Brian and muddling through to a real relationship is awkward and hard, but they make it. The second half of the book stunned me. Ethan's navigation of this new phase of his life is hard. You can feel his emotions so strongly. I was surprised to see 'Bubbles' reappear as the strength and help he needs.
