Historia
You can’t truly understand the last decade of the 20th century without a look at the muddy, electrifying rock music that would come to define it: grunge. For such a short-lived genre—at least in the mainstream—grunge had a lasting impact on American music and culture. It also provides a unique lens through which to examine the post-Reagan, pre-internet America of the 1990s. In the six lectures of The Story of Grunge, you’ll explore the rise and evolution of the genre, tracing it from Seattle subculture to MTV and the Billboard charts, all the way to its decline and evolution into new forms.

Social and political backdrop to grunge
Revisado: 03-19-25
So I thought this was interesting. To hear about my favorite musical genre from this angle. One shouldn’t be shocked that “grunge” was/is counter culture, much like the 60s. And that some artists were pretty vocal about their attitudes and political views, nirvana and Pearl Jam especially. Spends almost too much time with those bands, as if the Seattle scene didn’t already exist before them. As usual, Alice In Chains (my fave)gets a few mentions at best. Maybe because they werent as political? But still, an interesting listen.

Historia
Alice in Chains was the first of grunge's big four - ahead of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden - to get a gold record and achieve national recognition. With the charismatic Layne Staley behind the microphone, they became one of the most influential and successful bands to come out of the Seattle music scene. But as the band got bigger, so did its problems.

Well researched, sometimes tough read but Alice did not participate
Revisado: 11-15-24
I’ve already done the whole AIC/ Layne Staley deep dive on the Internet. This book is often used as source info and I decided to check it out, even knowing the guys from AIC, and much of Layne Staleys family, did not participate. If you are a fan, you get a mostly linear history of the band, from the formation of friendships in the late 80s to the last studio sessions with Layne in the late 90s to the successful continuation of AIC version 2.0. Plus you get a glimpses into some of the other bands that came up with AIC in the Seattle scene. The book does focus a lot on Layne drug habits and story, perhaps too much. But since his story is part of the legend of this band, one sort of has to go there. There is one small story that seems to conflict with Mark Lanegans 2020 memoir which I only know because I just finished his book. Small matter. Overall a well researched book. I didn’t mind the somewhat monotone narrator. I’ve listened twice so far.

Wraps it up
Revisado: 12-27-23
As violent and gory and gross as this series could be, I found it strangely calming on audio, no doubt thanks to Mr Bray. Great character voices. Story ended well, as well as it could anyway.

Finally listened to the original story
Revisado: 11-05-23
I always loved the 1963 movie, “the Haunting” with Julie Harris. I saw it on TV as a child, and it always stayed with me. Then I saw the 2018 Netflix series, “the Haunting of Hill House” which takes a different (and beautiful) spin on the story. It wasn’t until just recently I decided to listen to the original work by Shirley Jackson. Though I found myself envisioning the characters and the house from the original 1963 film as I was listening, Ms Dunnes narration gave the characters and the setting new life. She really captured the personalities of each character. A really great listen, would also be a great read.

And we’ll never know what happens…
Revisado: 01-09-23
Actually started to get invested in the characters by book 3, but in 4-5, the relentless pace of action action action with some plot development took over (difference between writers I guess) and we are sort of left hanging as to the fate of humanity and our main characters.

Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities ("It's a piece of cake! Just do four hours of interviews, find someone else to write it, put your face on the cover, and voila!") I have decided to tell these stories just as I have always done, in my own voice.

Could listen to Dave all day long
Revisado: 04-15-22
You don’t even have to be a fan of the Foo Fighters to appreciate this book, you just have to love music, love rock n roll. Dave Grohl has an infectious love of life, his craft and the people he works with, and you can hear it in every story. I’m so glad I got the audio version of this book, so I could hear the stories straight from Dave.

This incident changed everything
Revisado: 11-24-21
This bank robbery and shoot out was pivotal in changing how police responded to incidents. This is the one where it was clear that the bad guys were out gunning the good guys and that had to change. People who complain about the police being too militaristic these days - this is one of the reasons why that happened.

Different sort of dystopian/apocalyptic tale
Revisado: 09-02-19
I did like it. Zombies but not zombies; an all knowing A/I, the CDC, hillbillies with guns and God, an aging rock star
and a road trip. Some editing could have kept the pace going a bit better and the not very veiled Social commentary was at times forced, but overall an interesting story, with a cloud of uncertainty at the end.
