We use DNA routinely - to cure diseases, solve crimes, and reunite families. Yet we've known about it for only 60 years. And what we're continuing to learn about it every day has the potential to transform our health, our nutrition, our society, and our future. But what, exactly is DNA, the self-replicating material present in nearly all living organisms?

Revisado: 09-25-15
Having listened to quite a few Great Courses on quite advanced science topics and being mostly very impressed, I was expecting to have the field of genetics, which is new to me, explained in a way that would make me at least comfortable with the basic concepts. But I find this course curiously unstructured and difficult to follow. Maybe it's just me, but I still don't really get it.

Economies are deeply complex systems. The marketplace involves many economic actors behaving in rational and irrational ways, sustaining a dizzying array of interconnected activity. Because of the number of participants involved, the unpredictability of their actions, and the sheer variety of possible actions, some degree of economic uncertainty is inevitable. In 24 practical and empowering half-hour lectures, The Economics of Uncertainty takes the mystery and dread out of uncertainty, giving you the tools to deal with risk in every phase of your life.

Too simplistic, suitable for children almost
Revisado: 09-25-15
Perhaps you would find this worth your time if you had never ever read or spent any time thinking about probability theory and stuff like that. But I found this way too simplistic to be interesting and I will not be able to finish it. The narrator is OK even though I'm a bit allergic to not very funny pre-written jokes accompanied by hints of chuckling.

I like the perfect pacing and the way tricky grammar is deconstructed into its literal meaning. Nice voice too!

Historia
A squared plus b squared equals c squared. It sounds simple, doesn’t it? Yet this familiar expression opens a gateway into the riotous garden of mathematics, and sends us on a journey of exploration in the company of two inspired guides, Robert and Ellen Kaplan. With wit, verve, and clarity, they trace the life of the Pythagorean theorem, from ancient Babylon to the present, visiting along the way Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein, President James Garfield, and the Freemasons - not to mention the elusive Pythagoras himself.

Impossible to follow by just listening
Revisado: 04-29-14
This is, I am quite sure, an absolutely brilliant book, but it just does not work in audiobook form. Not for me anyway, I am not able to follow without consulting the apparently numerous illustrations of the printed version. Giving up after a chapter and a half! Wonderful narrator by the way, will check out his other work!

Amazon.com started off delivering books through the mail. But its visionary founder, Jeff Bezos, wasn't content with being a bookseller. He wanted Amazon to become the everything store, offering limitless selection and seductive convenience at disruptively low prices. To do so, he developed a corporate culture of relentless ambition and secrecy that's never been cracked. Until now.

Whatever your views on climate change, it's important to understand how the current scientific consensus on global warming evolved out of basic physical principles and a broad range of observations. This lucid series of 12 lectures is designed to do exactly that-reviewing the most up-to-date research and explaining the concepts, tools, data, and analysis that have led an overwhelming number of climate scientists to conclude that Earth is indeed warming and that we humans are in great part responsible.

Interesting but not gripping (mostly)
Revisado: 04-29-14
Very interesting story of course, but I was left with the feeling that it could have been made more gripping. It is quite long and the narrator a bit soulless, but all in all I am glad I bought it and I sort of enjoyed it.

Historia
Masters of Doom is the amazing true story of the Lennon and McCartney of video games: John Carmack and John Romero. Together, they ruled big business. They transformed popular culture. And they provoked a national controversy. More than anything, they lived a unique and rollicking American Dream, escaping the broken homes of their youth to produce the most notoriously successful game franchises in history - Doom and Quake - until the games they made tore them apart. This is a story of friendship and betrayal, commerce and artistry.

So good, I wish there was more of it or more books like it. Thought at first that the narrator was overdoing the funny voices, but he won me over in the end. Highly recommended if you have a soft spot for stories from the golden age of programming!
