Historia
For much of his life, Esau McCaulley was taught to see himself as an exception: someone who, through hard work, faith, and determination, overcame childhood poverty, anti-Black racism, and an absent father to earn a job as a university professor and a life in the middle class.

An excellent story of Redemption
Revisado: 09-23-23
Esau has woven a captivating story of God at work in the life of a family. Heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. He speaks about race in a way that we can all see ourselves in the story and points us all towards something transcendent.

Historia
When an impoverished school district loses its accreditation and the affluent community of Crystal Ridge has no choice but to open their school doors, the lives of three very different women converge: Camille Gray - the wife of an executive, mother of three, long-standing PTA chairwoman, and champion fund-raiser - faced with a shocking discovery; Jen Covington, the career nurse whose long, painful journey to motherhood finally resulted in adoption; and 22-year-old Anaya Jones - the first woman in her family to graduate college and a brand-new teacher at Crystal Ridge's top elementary school, unprepared for the powder-keg situation....

Necessary story for our times.
Revisado: 07-26-18
This book gives insight into the complexity of racism in America. It eloquently describes how overcoming our past is not an easy or simple fix. I appreciated the author’s ability to not make anyone the simple “bad” guy but that we all have things going on in our lives that contribute to our reactions and that we need to take the time to listen and learn from one another. If you are beginning your journey into race relations in America this book is a great place to start.
