In this work Cioran writes about Western civilizations, the writer, the novel, about mystics, apostles, philosophers. For those to whom the very word philosophy brings visions of arduous reading, be assured: Cioran is crystal-clear, his style quotable and aphoristic.

Cioran Speaks
Revisado: 04-23-23
My second Cioran book read by Rick Adamson. The narrator must have studied Cioran’s material extensively to deliver what seems to be the author reading his own book. Captivating reproduction of the text!

E. M. Cioran confronts the place of today's world in the context of human history—focusing on such major issues of the twentieth century as human progress, fanaticism, and science—in this nihilistic and witty collection of aphoristic essays concerning the nature of civilization in mid-twentieth-century Europe.

Depressingly Inspiring
Revisado: 03-12-23
Found Cioran quotes on YouTube, but wanted more. Finally another human expresses what I could not regarding the frailty of mankind and its seemingly futile attempts to make sense of life. If churches and universities would make this required reading, their congregations and graduates wouldn’t believe the fantasy of “everything happens for a reason” or “God’s got a wonderful plan for your life”.

Beautiful. Inspiring. Love
Revisado: 04-16-22
One of my top five audiobooks. Gentle voice, perfectly timed background stories that directed the narrative, and life changing insight. On my deathbed I’ll either regret not putting these themes into practice, or I’ll be able to say “that book changed my life”.

Historia
Booker T. Washington fought his way out of slavery to become an educator, statesman, political shaper, and proponent of the "do-it-yourself" idea. In his autobiography, he describes his early life as a slave on a Virginia plantation, his steady rise during the Civil War, his struggle for education, his schooling at the Hampton Institute, and his years as founder and president of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, which was devoted to helping minorities learn useful, marketable skills.

The narration is so well delivered, that I had to remind myself that it wasn’t the author speaking. If this hadn’t been made into a feature film, it should be. What he accomplished is almost a work of fiction....simply unbelievable. One of my top choices for overall satisfaction from an audiobook.

My Blissful Unawareness is Gone
Revisado: 11-22-21
It's been a year since I first encountered this book. I may have heard the term "Gulag Archipelago" in college or a podcast, but it wasn't until Jordan Peterson used the book as a reference in his writings. To be brief, I'll just list the insights and emotions generated while listening: Disbelief at the cruelty of mankind; anger; physical manifestations of illness while hearing about the "interrogations"; bewilderment that family would snitch on each other for the The State; fear that we're heading down this path in 2020 and now 2021.
Young liberally-minded progressives would do well to listen and understand the fallout of revolutions. I'd purchase $1,000 worth of subscriptions if I could find a group of young people to listen intently.
Note about narration: Stoic, serious, sometimes monotone, but it fits the content. Knowing that the son of Solzhenitsyn was the narrator increased the impact of the stories. Highly recommended but not without a warning: It's not for the faint of heart!

Historia
Hailed as one of the world’s masterpieces of psychological realism, The Death of Ivan Ilyich is the story of a worldly careerist, a high-court judge who has never given the inevitability of his death so much as a passing thought. But one day death announces itself to him, and to his shocked surprise he is brought face-to-face with his own mortality. How, Tolstoy asks, does an unreflective man confront his one and only moment of truth?

Starting My Second Listen

Just finished my first listen through. Starting my second as soon as hit submit on this review. Perhaps I can kick this smoking habit now. If you know how difficult that is, then take that as an indication of the impact this story has. Of the 100 or so audiobooks I've completed, the narrator is in the top 10!

Not One For a Quick-Listen Escape
Revisado: 08-24-21
As someone who can relate to many of the qualities of those featured in the stories, I was tempted to skip sections or find something shorter that required less mental energy (my ADHD’s influence). I’m glad I stuck with it. I feel like I need to write a final exam as it was like taking a college course. Hats off to the author for such in-depth research.
If you’re a “tortured creative” who vacillates frequently about your life’s path, this book will encourage you to forge ahead with your passions....as it did me. Or, if you believe that genius is just for a few gifted human anomalies, it may be enlightening.
But for the casual audiobook listener....beware, it’s heavy, detailed, focused listening. I failed to mention: Outstanding narration!

Overall a fascinating study. Arms you with insight into manipulation that goes beyond general human interaction. The narration is not storybook or expressive, and is off putting at first, but after a while the voice grows on you. I’m on my second lister.

Required Reading for All College Students

While endings are a natural part of business and life, we often experience them with a sense of hesitation, sadness, resignation, or regret. But consultant, psychologist, and bestselling author Dr. Henry Cloud sees endings differently. He argues that our personal and professional lives can only improve to the degree that we can see endings as a necessary and strategic step to something better.

All Audiobooks Should Be This Good
Revisado: 01-01-21
My boss gave me the hard copy of this book two years ago. I skimmed it and put it on the shelf. What a mistake that was. If I had listened to this eye opening and revelatory program, I might have saved myself and others much pain and frustration by at least discussing a necessary ending seriously instead of attempting half measured manipulations. Also, the flow, layout, and narration is some of the best I’ve ever heard. I’m a Dr Cloud fan now. More please!
