Wobbly Timeline
Revisado: 10-04-21
I really wanted to like this book. I found the Forsters interesting and was all in to take the dive into their cola empire. Like others, the rapid time jumping discombobulated me. I don't mind a disjointed time line, but the switches would often feel random. I did listen to the book and often the narrator didn't leave silence between breaks, making it seem like it was all apart of the same thought, when in actuality you were switching perspectives. I wonder if each section focused on a central event, which the time jumps derived from, if that would help the narrative feel more united. Either way, you have to pay attention. Snippets of details are dropped which connect to later stories.
Having just read Malibu Rising this summer, Taylor Jenkins Reid explores a family saga in a similar fashion, but more successfully. I think in part it was due to the main storyline being anchored to the grand Riva party. The reader had a space to ground themselves and gain perspective from the deep dives into the family's past.
American Pop was an ambitious project and you can tell Wright trying to pack the novel with as much detail from the Foresters as he could. With a bit of tweaking it could've been perfect.

Fast Introduction
Revisado: 08-26-20
It was an ok introduction to Conan Doyle. I was able to pick up on some trivia and made connections to his work I hadn't done previously. But the narrative style felt a little bit disjointed to me. They would quickly speak on a topic and race off to the next thing. I know that it is a 2 hour program, but maybe they could've focused on bigger themes then. Some of the people who were interviewed had a tendency to mumble, so I missed some of their observations too (like why Doyle was for female education, but not female suffrage). I keep being left disappointed by these quick biography profiles.

Could do without the moaning
Revisado: 07-29-20
I overall enjoyed this story. I never heard of it, but have been told that it paved the way for Dracula and other modern vampire stories. I appreciate that it is also considered early queer fiction, mainly between Carmilla and her female victims. I managed to get a copy of the original text and Robin Brooks definitely punched up the sensualism. Some scenes between Carmilla and Laura were elaborated on and were directed with a lot of breathy words and moaning. It was really distracting to the point where I couldn't tell if Carmilla was having a fainting spell or an orgasm. If that was dialed back a bit, this would've been perfect.

Historia
For thousands of years, there has been a cycle: a Demon King rises and conquers, and a Hero is reborn a hundred years later to defeat him. Each time, civilizations are ground to dust beneath the Demon King's hordes, but humanity has remained secure in the belief that a Hero of legend will always save them. There's just one slight problem. It's only been 23 years since the Demon King's latest rise, and this time, he's already conquered more than half the world. If humanity simply waits for the Hero's return, there may be no world left for him to save.

Legend of Zelda spoof
Revisado: 07-15-20
This was a fun little romp that poked fun at the Legend of Zelda and other open world video games. What happens when a society relies too heavily on prophecy and feels compelled to wait around for the Legendary Hero to come save them all? This time the demon king is rising too fast, almost 70 years too early from the appointed time of world domination (seriously, every 3 generations they are going through this crap? Sounds exhausting). Yui decides they can't afford to wait for the hero to be born and decides to hoodwink herself into the position. A lot of references to Ocarina of Time (spoiler alert if you somehow never got around to playing that game). Sometimes the narrative was bogged down by lengthy explanations on how video game mechanics worked, causing me to space out a little bit. It would be fun to see this concept developed into a tv show.

Historia
In 10 lectures, award-winning historian Patrick N. Allitt transports listeners to England in the 1840s and 1850s. During those two decades, Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, became one of the most influential people in the country and remains a figure of fascination even today. In fact, the British royal family as we know it wouldn't exist without the private and public actions of this detached, impartial, and upright political figure.

Wonderful performance, but need more details.
Revisado: 06-27-20
I really enjoyed Patrick Allitt's lectures on Prince Albert. I guess I am a little greedy, because I wanted more information about the Prince in a biographical sense, than what these short lectures were really designed for.

Historia
In 1912, scientist Marie Curie spent two months on the British seaside at the home of Hertha Ayrton, an accomplished mathematician, inventor, and suffragette. At the time, Curie was in the throes of a scandal in France over her affair with Paul Langevin, which threatened to overshadow the accomplishment of her second Nobel Prize. Performed by Kate Mulgrew and Francesca Faridany at the Minetta Lane Theatre, this play by Lauren Gunderson is an ode to two remarkable women.

That was a quick, enjoyable audio play. It mainly highlights how Marie Curie handles the aftermath of her secret affair becoming public and her friendship with Hertha Ayrton. It was a slice of history I wasn't aware of before.

Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

Could've been organized better
Revisado: 04-28-20
I really enjoyed the information covered in this series, but it could've been organized more clearly. It immediately starts in the middle of a story, with no introduction to tell you what's going on or why you should care. Once I figured out how they were presenting the information, I got along much better. Some of the actor's pretending to be the historical figures was an interesting choice. Sometimes I couldn't tell who was an reenactment and who was a modern historian. It would be fun to see a version of this as a video documentary.

Audio Reader Ruined It
Revisado: 11-24-19
I loved this series as a kid. I should have never reread it, as book are much better written nowadays. But with the right reader, I think the series might have been saved. Dufris makes Bobby so whiney and hyper. Not the hero of my youth. He emphasized all of the books flaws and shoved them in your face. I would love to hear a new version with Kirby Heyborne. Sometimes I would repeat the sentance in my head how Kirby would read it and it made it instantly better. How do we get him on this project?

Revisado: 01-31-19
I enjoyed this way more than the first book. Shusterman filled all the plot holes I struggled with in the first book. Tremblay was an amazing reader and gave each character their own personality. You instantly knew which person was speaking. My only complaint is I wish he gave a second more space between the end of the chapter and the Thunderhead's musing. It threw me off in the beginning

Poor quality
Revisado: 07-25-18
The sound quality was really quiet for this soundtrack. The others have been much better. I could barely understand what anyone was saying, let alone added with some made up space country accents. Since I kept spacing out, I wasn't too sure what was going on, but basically the Doctor saves some people and they all live happily ever after.
