Historia
The Greater Middle East—the vast region between the Mediterranean and China, encompassing much of the Arab world, parts of northern Africa, and Asia—existed for millennia as the crossroads of empire. But with the dissolution of empires in the twentieth century, postcolonial states have endeavored to maintain stability. Robert D. Kaplan explores Greater Middle East through reporting and travel writing to reveal deeper truths about the impacts of history on the present and how the requirements of stability over anarchy are often in conflict with the ideals of democratic governance.

The books I love best are those which challenge and change my perspectives and hard-held beliefs. Wow, this book did that and more. Kaplan's wtiting, as usual, is beautiful.

Very NPR-ish

It is a book that has the best and worst of an NPR podcast, but overall it's an enjoyable listen.

Historia
Past and present civilizations failed and fail for many reasons, but the number-one predictor of a civilization’s survival is its sense of religion—or lack thereof. So argues David Goldman in How Civilizations Die (and Why Islam Is Dying Too). The strength of a civilization’s religion affects its purpose, its fertility rate, and ultimately, its fate, says Goldman—who then argues that, contrary to popular belief, Islamic countries are in the last throes of death while Christian America is in a position to flourish.

Meh
Revisado: 02-20-21
Some interesting points, but short-sighted at times. Author draws narrow and unimaginative conclusiones from these points. Author sneaks in the "Obama is a secret muslim" myth, which was frankly annoying.
Nevertheless, well worth the listen.

One of the best books I've listened to. A clear vision of past, present, and possible future.
